Is there a way to add servers on the same app? Like if you use Lemmy. Zip , could you add other instances/servers and switch between them just as easy as you do communities? If this feature exists could someone explain how to me?

If not, this needs to be a thing. Add to that pixelfed, piefed and mastodon posts..

If it's all decentralized, what would prevent us from having it all in one single app. With maybe siloing of the different servers, so the serverwide rules are still inforceable.

But essentially, the all feed would really be all.

I was under the impression that i could see any and all post/community provided it doesn't violate the rules of the server I'm on. I'm figuring out this isn't quite the case...

Yet i get the feeling there's a lot I'm potentially missing. I keep seeing dead links, seemingly abandoned posts/communities with little to no activity...

I just don't know for sure. Also how do people figure out which server to join? How do you know for example of a certain community you're interested in is present in server A or b?

Maybe this is a really stupid question, and the answer is so obvious its self-explanatory. But i have to admit I'm lost

Edit: tldr: i want to see non-lemmy fediverse content in the same app. Or if this is not (yet) possible, i wanted suggestions on how to configure my setup so i somehow see everything (i thought) i was missing. Also thank you everyone who corner so far for being so kind in your answers, much appreciated!

You definitely can add a few accounts to most of the 3rd party apps, like I use Boost and I have a bunch of accounts in there, Lemmy and PieFed accounts too.

You're already on lemmy.zip and that's a good one, you already have access to pretty much everything. Just subscribe to a bunch of remote communities, you definitely don't need an account on every server.

Have you browsed here: https://lemmy.zip/communities?listingType=All&sort=TopMonth&page=1

Which ones? Share some examples. Some stuff is just old and there might be newer replacements we can suggest, or some communities are too niche and you have to go a bit more general. Remember we don't have millions of users (yet?)

You could also try PieFed since it makes it easy to follow Feeds/Topics which can group many communities together so it's easier to find stuff. PieFed can also follow Mastodon content. Or try Mbin since that's the best if you want to follow Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin/Mastodon content from one place.

You can also add multiple accounts to... your browser.
Lemmy basically never logs you out anyway.
The browser supports features most apps don't.
    Bookmarks, history, multitabs, adblock, etc.
At the expense of what... push notifications?

Using reddit without a third-party app was unthinkable, but lemmy UI isn't actively hostile.
But yea, like forums of old, it's not immune to dead links and stuff like that.

Reddit isn't immune to dead links either lol, even text posts I often see were deleted and can't read them anymore. There are plenty of dead subreddits too.

Note here, in order for instances to properly federate in some sense copies of posts and interactions have to be made across multiple servers, this is one of the basic security/data control tradeoffs of the fediverse but the positive is that it naturally sets up the possibility (if that is what people want) for data to be "backed up" in multiple places making truly dead links a less likely outcome. A database engineer might look at the fediverse and scream about duplication of data all over the place but that is only one perspective to take on design, resiliency and redundancy have values we can easily invisibilize when we start quantifying everything.

The most important thing for making a fediverse that helps preserve human interactions I think is getting people excited about the generative capacity of sharing and duplication rather than just seeing these as a peculiarity of federation on ActivityPub and an inherent weakness/messiness to it.
