Improve surroundings? Well the jeepneys are always blowing smoke out, so maybe fix that problem.

In line with the question, how would you work towards fixing the problem?

    That’s a great question.

I’m a foreigner here, but I’m a permanent resident and have been living here for close to 10 years.

I say that as a disclaimer that I know I do not fully understand the Jeepney driver situation, but from my perspective, they are bad for the environment and should be modernized or held to a certain standard in terms of emissions and functionality.

Too often do I see tons of black and white smoke pouring out of them. I know it’s not really in the budget of the drivers to solve this, but everything else breathing this air is affected.

Trying to get rid of jeepneys will be impossible if you attempt to recommend solutions that would be either too costly or complex for the average jeepney driver to work on, as in some cases being a driver is their sole source of income. They are willing to trade in something if it can be afforded or even given out for free, such as replacement Euro-4 compliant engine blocks or hybrid systems.

What about replacing the jeepney situation with more modern busses like the ones in Korea and Japan?

One thing I often see is Jeepneys just stopped in the road waiting to get enough passengers before they continue on their route. I see this causing a lot of traffic. I think privately owned Jeepneys are causing a lot of problems.

Would it be better if it was a modern bus system run by the government? Maybe the Jeepney drivers could be guarenteed a job as a driver and paid a minimum that would cover at least what they earn driving the Jeepney.

To be clear, I am just sharing what I see as a foreigner and hoping to learn more about the situation.

Those buses are still too large.

There are already microbuses here (but they don't deserve being called "jeepneys"), however not all of them are able to access narrower streets or drive through rougher roads or ford streams in remote mountain valleys. That they are very expensive as brand new versus jeepneys, which are often bought and sold or traded even 20 or 30 years old and can still be serviced with existing parts.

That why with the driver behavior resembles so much like fishermen trying to catch fish, it's literally every man for himself.

Having been on the street for years, and having seen the transport systems of, say, Indonesia and Vietnam and Thailand where there way more motorcycles than here, until there is proper public transport, we lower-class Filipinos have to put up with the chaos of not only individualized and fragmented transport systems but also the continuing demand for private transport whereupon well-to-do Filipinos shy away from mass transit but also the prestige of having their own car, and thus causing greater congestion issues than it was 40 years ago.

  • What are actual proposed solutions other the public transportation systems here? I know a lot of foreigners do not take the jeepney due to the abiguity of their routes. I used to take the lrt and mrt a lot. But looking back on it, there are really long waits between trains, I wonder why they have not added more trains to each line.
