This might be an annoying quote on the surface, but I find that it hits at a lot of things.

For example, in various cultures the emphasis on individual achievement as an end to itself can be HUGE, and it's arguably one of the founding tenets of some nations, like the USA. And probably traditional Britain, in many ways. And then, in other cultures it's still very much encouraged to personally excel, but specifically as a part of family & culture, at least in terms of lip-service. But all that's just one way of looking at Individuality.

Another completely different way of looking at it relates to Jung's basic idea of 'who the heck are we as a discrete person, anyway?' Are we really so utterly unique as individuals, and if so, where does that uniqueness lie, exactly?

Along those lines, I must confess I'm rather fascinated with the idea of higher meditation, which allegedly can lift one up in to states in which the ego starts to fade... which can possibly help one feel connected to life, the universe, and everything. A bloody-brilliant feeling, from what I understand. All the way up to the famous "ego death," allegedly.

Too bad I'm a pretty sucky meditator, but oh well. Maybe in my next life? 😅

I also understand that 'shrooms can be a pretty good way of opening up to the cosmos... perhaps helping one escape from this crazy-competitive, complex world of 'civilisation,' which interestingly only dates back 12Kyrs at best. In fact, for the vast expanse of sapiens history (~300Kyrs), we lived a very different kind of life.

"Anyway, that's all I got to say about that."

We’re a social species. We desire to be validated and recognized for who we are (“individuality”), and that’s inextricably tied to our instincts to be connected to a bigger group. They’re not opposing ideas, rather more so two ends of the same stream. Too much of one or the other is unhealthy, of course, but the flow is all the same. No need to disavow either :)

Assuming I understand you correctly, then yes-- we're indeed a clan and tribe-based species at heart (and identical genetics!), not unlike you can see in some of our fellow apes and other social animals.

And yeah, there's a certain classic imperative working-- like, how much does one strive for individual position vs. how much does one 'be a good soldier and support the group.'

IMO we somehow lost track upon these realities, and quite badly, I'd argue.

As in, we forgot all these basic facts of reality, altho there's a heavy disclaimer, and it's this-- as a species close to ~500 generations now, repeatedly trained upon the idea of 'civilisation is good and normal,' the chances of us individually taking all this in to account upon a healthy mindset is... just, damn. Negligible.

And yet our natural / historical / traditional state upon 300Kyrs of sapiens' existence is to be allies upon each other, for the direct purposes of survival. We're meant to be friends and help each other... is a basic sapiens truth IME.
