If a gold ring is too small for your finger, you can place it onto this, and use a hammer to drive the wedge into the middle, and expand the ring (without going to a professional jeweler).

Usually it's only good for a 1 size adjustment, and it doesn't work with some rings, especially if they aren't an even width all the way around.
