After searching for Sailing@thebrainbin.org specifically on Lemmy.ca it seems to get federated as it now shows up in https://lemmy.ca/c/Sailing@thebrainbin.org but even after successfully posting to the com from my Lemmy.ca accout (as can be seen https://thebrainbin.org/m/Sailing/t/1867184/Fog-fog-WHALES-and-then-more-fog) I can't view any posts including my own from this instance without a direct link.

It seems to be working now, I can see the post that you made on both views of the community:

Normally, any posts from before lemmy.ca learned about the community would not have federated over. A lot of Lemmy and Piefed instances make use of tools like lemmy-federate in order to automate that process. I'm not familiar with if Mbin has something like that.

It is possible to manually pull individual posts, by pasting the link into the search bar on lemmy.ca. For example, I was able to add the two older posts by copying their original links (ex. https://thebrainbin.org/m/Sailing/t/1849603/Would-this-photo-of-the-MIT-sailing-pavilion-be-a#comments), and pasting them into the search here: https://lemmy.ca/search

Is there any way this could work through third party apps like Boost or does it only work through the Lemmy.ca page?

From what I understand, it is possible for a third party app to trigger the same endpoints on Lemmy (either the search endpoint, or the resolve_object one), but it depends on how it is implemented. Boost might modify the search input before triggering the search, which would break the functionality.

I don't have a link handy to test with right now. You could also ask in !boostforlemmy@lemmy.world and direct them to this discussion. :)
