I remember discussing this with a colleague when it first happened, and we both agreed the most likely explanation was CP.

I'm still astonished that our top cop was dumb enough to have that on his work computer though.

In NZ, criminals are punished after they've been tried and sentenced, not before. They're only detained before trial if they pose a flight risk.

    So why did the first links I clicked both mention other Kiwi's getting arrested before their trial for possessing CSAM?

    Maybe I'm just a dumb Aussie, but please help me wrap my head around why it seems to be different rules for a former deputy police commissioner?
