This is more of a bad dream which has already passed. Rather than sectarian lines the region is splitting on imperialism. It seems like you're painting the region as having some kind of innate barbaric cultural quality. The history is more complex and interesting than six minutes of yelling, even if it would make a good climactic moment in some Adam Curtis inspired documentary.

I hold this up as an example of what debates on television should all look like. A level of involvement in the discourse, chewing the scenery, gnawing it apart, that we should all aspire to

They're definitely not numb or complacent and that is something too many of us have fallen victim to. But this is not a healthy debate. The moderator is barely there, and the speakers don't get any deeper than ideological hatred and disagreements on basic facts.

I don't think it is productive at all, the moderator practically dissolves most of the video. Ideally all of us should be yelling at the top of our lungs, understanding each other perfectly. Things feel eerily silent, like people speaking to me through deep water.

I strongly disagree, because there’s no communication. Not having known either of them earlier, I feel like one’s a jerk and the other might have lied about his identity, but I don’t feel more informed about Saddam Hussein or the public response to his killing.

Maybe this hits differently if you’re better informed about who these people are.
