Hamas Heads Toward Selecting New Political Bureau Chief as Haniyeh Leads with Clear Majority Over Rivals
Special Translation | Yedioth Ahronoth

Hamas is preparing, within days or weeks, to select a new chief for the General Political Bureau following the assassination of Yahya Sinwar and the conclusion of the interim leadership phase that was formed afterward.

Two main names are emerging in the race as official candidates: Khalil al-Hayya, the movement's leader in Gaza, and Khaled Mashal, the leader of the external wing.

According to informed sources, the movement's General Shura Council is preparing to hold the elections soon, amid internal assessments indicating that Khalil al-Hayya is advancing with a clear advantage, based on broad support within the movement both inside and outside, especially from Hamas leadership in the West Bank under Zaher Jabarin, in addition to the Qassam Brigades leadership.

In contrast, Khaled Mashal is viewed as representing a different political approach that focuses on regional understandings and strengthening ties with moderate Arab states while distancing from Iran.

Despite preparations for electing a permanent leadership for the Political Bureau, assessments suggest that the movement will not announce any strategic changes in the current phase amid the repercussions of the Gaza war and the failure to transition to the second phase of the ceasefire.

@Miro_Collas It is bizarre, google translate "الحية" as "Hanya" which s very very strange, but "الحي" is translated correctly "Al-Hayyeh". I have to log in to report it, which I can't do with Tor. @palestine@lemmy.ml @palestine@fedibird.com
