Description from Wikimedia Commons: “The peplos-clad woman in this fresco is labeled as an 'offerant', which is appropriate since she's carrying a silver offering tray with herbs, food, and other implements to perform a ritual offering to the gods. @phistorians that sheer cloth of the sleeves is fascinating to me. Theoretically Chinese silk methods weren't open for another 900 years. How are they making or even imagining something so fine?

    @Tarnport this type of diaphanous fabric is seen in many Roman frescoes, but the material involved is something scholars aren’t quite certain about. Theories include finely woven linen from Egypt or silk acquired through trade with Asia (even if the weaving methods were different from later processes).
