What a surprise, a far-right movements supported CEO that acts like a bully towards his employees and wants to embrace a technology linked to fascist ideas...
There is one item I'm struggling with when it comes to using 'ai' (is this a synonym for 'llm' or 'generative ai' these days?). You mentioned you used ai to 'form an opinion'. For myself this is a 'red flag' because in my opinion, if you can't formulate your opinion you don't have a opinion at all. But I am very hard on this topic and I personally consider this point open for debate (it is philosophical anyway). What I did like is the fact that you mentioned you used a program in the subcategory 'ai' to form a opinion. I still believe a human should be able to formulate his opinions by himself, but if you mention you used a tool to help yourself you are showing a 'fair-play' attitude. And I am aware that some people have opinions but have more problems expressing those opinions than others, so with the help of (software) tools there might be a possible win for everyone. Thanks again for a great video!
@lostinsignal@tilvids.com Move away from Proton! There's lots of good alternatives that are often better too! Not to mention, their CEO also happens to be a big GOP supporter + loves Trump, which combined with their LLM fanaticism (and honestly their attitude too, what the hell, calling your employees "losers" should not be allowed!), it's very bad.If you want email, mailbox.org, posteo (both German 🇩🇪), and Fastmail (Australian 🇦🇺) are awesome alternatives. Disroot (Dutch 🇳🇱) is decent if you want a free email service, it's oriented at activists, has a no logs policy, and, in order to prevent abuse and spam, they manually verify each signup. As for passwords, use KeePass stuff (ChiPass is a fork of KeePassXC and a bit better in my eyes, KeePassDX if you use Android, KeePassium if you use iOS, Syncthing to have the same passwords on all devices), for cloud storage, you should use Nextcloud (either a public instance or self-hosted!), and IVPN is a good alternative to Proton VPN (avoid Mullvad as they are supporting a racist Swedish party)
If anybody wants an alternative to Proton's services, I would highly recommend going with mailbox.org, posteo (German 🇩🇪), and Fastmail (Australian 🇦🇺) as an alternative to their email, the KeePass ecosystem in place of the password manager (KeePassXC or ChiPass for desktop, the latter has a stricter LLM policy + implemented Qt6 earlier I think, both support the same browser extension for autofill, KeePassDX for Android, KeePassium for iOS), if you need 2FA, Aegis for Android and Tofu for iOS are awesome and FOSS too. Ente Auth is decent if you want 2FA to sync between devices. And of course, another good VPN is IVPN (Mullvad's CEO is financing a racist party in Sweden, avoid them!), and for cloud storage you should just use Nextcloud (either a public instance, there's loads, or self-hosted)
Canceled Proton because enough is enough from that CEO. Moving to Tuta for mail and calendar (and soon drive).
I love it. Good or bad. Can't stop laughing. :))))
cool video nick!
@denny If you want a good alternative, I would recommend for drive, Nextcloud (can be self-hosted or you can use a public instance), for passwords, the KeePass ecosystem (Chipass is a fork of KeePassXC with a stronger LLM policy + I think they implemented Qt6 earlier, and it's also compatible with the same browser extension! On Android, you have KeePassDX, while on iOS, you have KeePassium), for VPN, IVPN is awesome (Mullvad's CEO is financing a racist party in Sweden, avoid them too)As for mail, the big one, you have LOTS of good alternatives. Tuta is decent, but I prefer more open IMAP compatible services since it means you have lots of email clients to choose from (Thunderbird, Geary, etc.), like mailbox.org, posteo (both German), and Fastmail (Australian). Mozilla has recently started rolling out "Thundermail Pro" which seems pretty cool (still supports standard protocols, not Thunderbird exclusive!)Avoid having all your eggs in one basket, otherwise you just get another Google or Microsoft!
I find it courageous that you talk honnestly about Proton in this video. It gives me a bit more trust in what you say.Thank you. 👍
I don't think Yen understands his customers or why we use Proton. And he sounds like another C-suite bully. Disappointing. I am a Proton customer and I'd really like to not move again, but I will.
I knew something bad was about to happen the second they stopped being a non-profit. I was just moving to Proton, is it too soon to de-Proton?
So disappointed with Proton 😞
omg you are here! So, this host is, at the very least, not good.
@thelinuxexperimentWeird, Firefox remembers the last file location for uploads?I just use the xdg-desktop-portal filepicker, as that means Firefox doesn't need access to all my files, and it is native to my system (KDE).Search for "xdg" in about:configcurious that they are apparently still tweaking their own filepicker
I found out about Proton yesterday, reading much of the article (the rest was behind a paywall), and it is absolutely gut-wrenching. I have been a loyal, paying customer of theirs for years now, and have recommended their services to people when the opportunity arose. GenAI is poison, once it comes out that even for a while they used it to develop their applications and services without anywhere close to enough human oversight, it casts doubt about the security and privacy they have promised all these years.I could live with them using AI to help streamline some of the more boring and repetitive tasks in programming, not happy about it, but I could live with it. But if genAI becomes the main driver of programming with barely any human oversight, if any at all, I can not reconcile that with the Proton as it has presented itself thus far. GenAI is anathema to what I have valued about Proton, and I sincerely hope the backlash grows such that Andy Yen has to either reverse course or is outright removed from his position for this. If there is anyone displaying "loser thinking" here, it's him and his fellow executives pushing for this.
The intellectual property of the forms and the functions of the software that are now vibe coded clones for are also copyrighted, no? - I'm thinking about GEMA vs. Suno or similar cases which imho were so far all won the royalty collecting societies. So I am skeptical. Besides you said "Now we have the tools..." - We don't! Big tec has these tools.
Thanks for the video and the information around these cases. While I do agree that Adobe and Microsoft can do with being taken down a notch, I don't think this business of "clean room" implementations by LLMs is the way to do it.You mention a few times, and I agree, that we already have good open source alternatives. Krita, GIMP, LibreOffice, InkScape, to name a few. Pouring energy and resources into replicating software that is beyond enshittified will only divide us more and we will remain under the whims of the central sources whose software we're trying to replicate. Adobe still controls the PSD format, etc. In the best case, we become subjects of the LLM models, but in a worse, and more likely case, we become subjects of the owners of the compute power that runs those models, Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.We can sit around and pretend, maybe for a few years, that we took back the power, the time will come when we lose meaningful access for one reason or another. At that point, more people will have stayed in an exploitative system than would have if these replicas didn't start popping up.The only silver lining I see here is that companies who might be able to influence the general direction of LLM use are being affected negatively and so they might start lobbying in a somewhat favorable direction.
@scallisto Thanks for feedback. :) That convinces me doing it myself, but have to compile it for ARM64 myself (no build for it as far as I see). Otherwise I cannot replace XC on my phone.
@half Have just switched and got the browser extension working, it's awesome! Thanks person :D
@half Just installed ChiPass, it looks awesome! I particularly like that it follows my system theme (KeePassXC doesn't, using Niri + Noctalia), will definitely switch if I can get browser extension working!
@scallisto They mentioned it in a pinned issue, haven't tried, yet. ChiPass supports everything that KeepassXC could do at least one year ago. Newer features are likely not included, unless they already developed those in the last 6 months the project exists.
@half Oh, didn't know ChiPass supported the browser extension! I might have to try it out soon. Not too much of a fan of KeePassXC's LLM policies, so if ChiPass works with that then I'll probably switch (it's a fork so should have equivalent functionality right?)
Wine on OpenBSD is super cool too! More options are always good, very happy for the BSD users :D
