Good point! I'm not sure why the put that in the headline instead of the tough conditions that are found on the island itself.

830 miles isn't that far. I drive 800 mile trips for work about 3 or 4 times a year.
Love the idea and the technique, but yeah, this sounds ick. I think I'd try one though, even tho in the beginning I was hesitant.
I'd eat people before plastic! Interesting concept, but ugh, I just don't know. I guess now that I think about it'd I'd try one. (the plastic cookie, not people)
uh
cool, but hard pass for me.
Sorry you're having to deal with all of that. And thank you for your insight.
As someone with fibro, this makes sense. The brain receives signals and "decides" whether it is pain or not. Pain is a construct of the brain, a useful one, to keep us from danger, but I've always thought of fibro as the brain misinterpreting nerve signals as pain.
My own anecdotal experience would seem to confirm this. I don't suggest this for anyone, but MDMA is like a miracle drug for me. I can take one and feel practically pain free for weeks. I would guess it is due to the flood of chemicals "resetting" my brain, causing my brain to not misinterpret the signals, but that's a wild guess.
Fossil fuel companies and cement producers
Yeah I guess so. I associate sentinels more with guardians but the meaning is broader.
Probably used 'sentinels" instead of canaries, so that people wouldn't get confused since it's nature. They don't want people to think actual canaries would be doing the work.
More like canaries than sentinels but yeah.
When the foods you eat are lower in energy density, your body's natural appetite signals work in your favor," Dr. Kahleova said. "You eat until you're satisfied, and you simply end up with fewer calories. That's a sustainable way to manage weight.
This is something I've been thinking about recently. You could eat enough to be comfortable, but still control your weight at the same time. It's very interesting to find that someone has actually studied it as well.
Congratulations on not being a homophobe,
I'm not seeking congrats about that. Just wondering why you didn't screencap the entire sidebar.
Really, it is an aggressive victory lap on perceived “liberal tears”.
I never said that. I never implied that. I don't think that. Those are entirely your words.
As someone with libertarian and conservative idalitions (which are fundamentally in conflict btw)
That's because, like I said, I don't vote along party lines.
you should understand how this issue in your post is related to the deregulation of chemical corporations, science denial, and systematic grant pulls.
I know what the article said I read it, then I posted it.
I’m not even a Democrat so really your whole notion of voting your way out of fascism is lost on me.
I'm not even a Republican, so really your whole notion of implying that I voted for fascism is lost on me
Ps: I do honestly value diversity, including that of opinion, which is why I haven’t blocked you or the communities on lemmy.today that have banned me for no reason. Although that doesn’t mean I can’t disagree. And it certainly doesn’t mean I have to be tolerant of threats to me or my community, and neither should you.
I appreciate that. I have never tolerated threats to your or your community. I'm happy to unblock you from my communities (EDIT: unbanned now) and I didn't even realize you have been banned from them. You may not be aware of just how much hate and trolling I get from people who don't read the articles and just assume stuff about me without ever having a real conversation.
I've been told to kill myself (with very graphic descriptions of how to go about doing that), co-mods have quit Lemmy regarding threats of doxing, my most recent Lemmy stalker said he wanted my jawbone and skull hanging on his wall, one of my fellow mods is trans and she was receiving horrible hateful DM's because she was helping me mod this comm, and some instances have my name hardcoded into their pre-ban lists.
Plenty of people who suggest that they may not be Democrats have been quickly, and wrongly, accused of being me.
And why does all that happen? Because I post a few articles from Fox News in a conservative comm. I don't post them to other communities, just my own conservative community. I don't spread it out to Lemmy. I just keep it in my little conservative community which most block anyway.
But people think that's worth fucking death threats? What the actual fuck is wrong with people these days? lolol
Congratulations on not being a homophobe, I didn't know this needed to be stated but I'm glad you are tolerant of atleast some groups of people. Here is a gold star sticker. ⭐
Guess you better hope enough people agree with you when it comes to elections this time
This is a lot less open minded than you think it is. Really, it is an aggressive victory lap on perceived "liberal tears". As someone with libertarian and conservative idalitions (which are fundamentally in conflict btw), you should understand how this issue in your post is related to the deregulation of chemical corporations, science denial, and systematic grant pulls.
Instead of some nuanced opinion or even any type of discussion, you would rather say, guess you should hope your side wins next, which is really just wrong on many levels as these are not things that should be a political difference of opinion, these are real crimes of an authoritarian regime.
I'm not even a Democrat so really your whole notion of voting your way out of fascism is lost on me.
Ps: I do honestly value diversity, including that of opinion, which is why I haven't blocked you or the communities on lemmy.today that have banned me for no reason. Although that doesn't mean I can't disagree. And it certainly doesn't mean I have to be tolerant of threats to me or my comunity, and neither should you.
What part of anything I said has anything to do with party lines? My exact words to you were: “Guess you better hope enough people agree with you when it comes to elections this time.” That’s not an endorsement of any party.
I’ve voted for Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and Independents. I don’t vote party lines. I look at the issues and candidates and make my own decision. I don't agree with everything Trump does, and don't disagree with everything Trump does. I'm not loyal to any party.
If Lemmy values diversity, shouldn’t that include differences of opinion and viewpoint, short of hate speech or illegal behavior?
Your screenshot of my own conservative community sidebar isn’t a “gotcha!" if that's what you are trying to imply. I wrote it, I know what it says, and I stand by it.
Trying to paint a label on me based on my communities doesn't work. I have lots of different interests and viewpoints.
Feel free to check out my libertarian community, where there are plenty of posts that are anti-republican, anti-administration, and anti-authority. Or check out my pro-womens sports community. And my ones about UFO's, and fitness.
As for your screen cap, you missed the top half where I mention that I support LGBTQIA+ rights and argue for equal rights. Is there a particular reason you didn't screen cap the entire sidebar?
Maybe you were just in a hurry and it was an oversight. So here, let me help:

Oh yeah, I guess I should assume you never vote conservative. And that your comment saying that I should ensure my candidate is voted into power somehow shows empathy and comradery.

Or maybe I should assume you are acting in bad faith?
I didn't vote for it. I said that you better hope enough people agree with you when it comes to elections this time. I stand by that. You seem to be making a lot of assumptions here.
Spoken like a "scientist" who voted for the exact deregulation that is causing the issue you are posting about.
Guess you better hope enough people agree with you when it comes to elections this time
Next step, conservative politicians to outlaw thermometers and deregulate the chemicals used in pesticides even more. If that fails, farm work will be "optional labor"™ for detainees at the local concentration camp.
@DonaldJMusk Exactly. And perhaps that is the maddening part. The physics doesn't care about our politics, and the atmosphere doesn't negotiate with our economic system. We can argue about it for another twenty years, but the planet won't be attending the meeting.
Change itself is not the problem. The Earth has always changed. What matters is the speed of the change, how much of it we are causing, and whether ecosystems and human societies can adapt without enormous suffering.
Correct. That's how most should view it. But for some reason, politics and money seem to get in the way. Which is annoying.
@DonaldJMusk This is serious, but I sometimes wonder whether we talk about environmental change as though the Earth is supposed to stay in one fixed configuration.Sea levels have always risen and fallen. Ice ages have come and gone. Continents move. Volcanoes create land and destroy it. Coastlines change.Change itself is not the problem. The Earth has always changed. What matters is the speed of the change, how much of it we are causing, and whether ecosystems and human societies can adapt without enormous suffering.Perhaps we need to stop treating CHANGE as the enemy and get much clearer about which changes are dangerous, why, and what we can realistically do about them.
This is the name I've used since I joined Lemmy. What name are you talking about? Why are you being so vague? Just say what you are trying to say, because I have no idea what you are talking about. Be clear. If you are trying to accuse of me of something, just say it directly.
