hey I appreciate it! I've never had a donation link and I've refused thus far to add one. I can afford it so I'm happy just to run it as-is.

At one point I wanted to set up an OpenCollective, but it's quite a lot of work actually.

I may post a donation link eventually, but for now no worries!

Have you removed the donation link that helped cover the instance's maintenance? Wouldn't mind throwing a couple bucks your way to help facilitate the migration.

Federation means, multiple servers talking to one another and exchanging information.

You're on lemdro.id, I'm on my own server, yet we can talk. I can shut down my server, and you will still see my comments from lemdro.id.

This ensures you don't have to be on a single website along with everyone else: you're always free to leave lemdro.id if you wish and go to say, lemmy.world or sh.itjust.works or whatever other instance you feel like.

Lemdro.id doesn't appear to block any servers, so it will federate with any server that doesn't block lemdro.id. You can see the list here: https://lemdro.id/instances/linked.

    Federating is default.

Also, the community is not the instance. The instances federate content of communities.

Your post reached me on the instance sh.itjust.works , for example and I'm replying through that. Hope that helps.

Frontend updates are easy, I went ahead and updated alexandrite. I might automate this at some point, but kind of like to be intentional about frontend versioning.

For backend stuff I'm much more careful and intentional since it's actually a little bit hard to run infrastructure that handles millions of requests globally on essentially a shoestring budget (but with strict requirements on backups etc).

Well, the budget is just kind of a challenge for me on how cheaply I can run a globally scaled instance. Some interesting engineering involved

Hey, thanks for bringing this up. It has been breaking intermittently but comes back when I restart the service. I'm planning to upgrade our picture service this weekend which should hopefully resolve this (we're on a pretty old version!).

I went ahead and restarted it, so feel free to try again with making your post. My apologies!

Yeah @coles mentioned over on Matrix they're aware of an issue with it and are looking into it.

Personally, I still just use catbox.moe for sharing images on here partially out of the worry of the hosting of memes going south :p
