Usually when a forwarded msg fails delivery, it gets black-holed without even keeping a record of the failure. Exceptionally, when my email service rejected a SimpleLogin-forwarded msg, SimpleLogin saved it for me and sent me a link to download the email. So that’s cool. And interesting that the notification from SimpleLogin was able to get through.

Hey there!

I've been eyeing email aliasing services like Firefox Relay or Proton's Hide-my-email feature for a while, but I'm cheap!
Well, that and I tend to like doing things myself whenever possible.

So after a bit of investigating I found out that using Cloudflare and a custom domain name, you can essentially get infinite free email aliases that get redirected to an existing email address (Gmail in my case, but I'm working on moving over to Proton at the moment).

One thing lead to another, and I ended up coding a Firefox extension to automatically inject aliases into email input fields using a custom domain name.

Because I find this whole setup cool, and am fairly certain that other people could benefit from it, I wrote up a full guide on my blog. I'm no Cloudflare or DNS expert, so feel free to point out any mistakes or make suggestions here or in my post's comments ;).

Note: Yes, I know that using a custom domain reduced the privacy benefits.

“20,000 mail accounts. 20,000 blogs. 5,000 mailing lists. 1,500 websites.

In Europe.

Run by volunteers of @cavallette, perfectly legal, and decidedly antifascist, feminist, queer.

Destroyed and shut down by Trump's administration, extra legally.”

This can serve as a reason to tell governments who try to force you to use email that you do not use email.

The spamgourmet faq does not show instructions on how to form an email address for sending in order to route via SG. (I thought it did.. was that removed?)

The forum is offline.

Use the source, luke? → Can’t because it’s in the walled garden of sourceforge.

Anyone know the (apparently secret) format?

Update

Apparently there is no way to do this on-the-fly, or so it seems. We must login to the SG website and click on an existing record then fill out a form to send a msg. Then it constructs an email address based on the input.

Just encountred https://onion.email/. Seems like they hijacked a catchy name to use for false advertising? I see no onion capability there.

WTF happened to onionmail.info?

So disturbing.

It was such a great resource for email. It was a quite unique infrastructure that gave a bit of freedom and privacy unlike any other email provider.

The rumor I heard was that if you operate a small email service and need to get Google to recognise your server and accept inbound email for gmail recipients, admins of those services must do a dance and go through various hoops like solving a CAPTCHA before their server’s IP address is whitelisted. (Is that true? I have never tried.)

Question 1:
Does Microsoft do the same thing as Google? Are there any hoops or obsticles to getting MS’s mail server to accept mail from a new mail server?

Question 2:
If an admin of a small service decides to do the same, and force sending servers to solve a CAPTCHA to get whitelisted, what does Microsoft do when their server encounters that barrier? Is there reciprocity, or does MS just do the bullying that it does and simply let outbound MS email get blocked at the destination?
