If I'm riding my expensive bikes, they aren't getting locked up anywhere, I'm walking that shit into where ever I'm going. I have a £50 bmx I'll take if I'm going anywhere I need to lock shit up as I don't care if someone wants to steal it.

I'll add something about having some sort of database of bike-friendly parking lots rated by their security.

For example here in Bogota you can find parking lots of all sorts - uncovered/covered, free/paid, will/won't provide a lock... I've learned thieves will steal bikes from parking lots you'd think are super secure and fancy because parking lot managers can't care less about bicycles

Also look into insuring your bike against theft. It cost me like $180/yr for my ~$1,300 e-bike, but obviously YMMV. Also a second lock is a good deterrent, and an air tag or something equivalent could help with recovery (assuming they would just dump the bike somewhere).
