I would configure your phone to already have the necessary settings for VPN, so that any subsequent device’s traffic routes through that VPN (home).

Does PostmarketOS work like that? On Android even if the phone has VPN active any device that connects to the phone's hotspot will not have the VPN connection.

The security and privacy of my parent's home connection is exactly the issue... there is none!

What are router tools? I honestly don't know anything about routers, but now that I think of it PiHole can function as a DHCP server... would that do it? I'm still confused about why I get one IP address in the terminal on Postmarket and a different IP address in the browser.

    Hi all,

I would like to use a linux phone with Ubuntu Touch or PostmarketOS to make a sort of mobile modem which, when my laptop connects to the phone's hotspot, would have Pihole for DNS and a VPN. Is this possible, and which general steps would you recommend to go about it? I have installed PostmarketOS on a Poco F1 and connected to my VPN using openvpn in the terminal, but then when I open a browser on the same phone and check my ip address it shows the address of the wifi I'm connected to, not the VPN. So it seems I have no idea about the architecture of this endeavor.

I hope to have this working by Christmas when I go to visit my parents. The intended internet connection would be

home wifi ---> linux phone [some level of privacy]---> my laptop wifi

    Thank you in advance!

It's Ubuntu. I'm "sure" of it because it didn't work after an update, and this has happened a couple times before that after an update my phone isn't recognized and then after the next update the phone is recognized again. I'm not sure what else it could be but I'm not in any sense an advanced user.

Every now and then an update borks the connection between my phone and computer via USB. Normally when I plug in my phone it appears as a disk in the file explorer. Which package is responsible for this? Gvfsd? Is it something about MTP? I would like to roll back to the previous version of whatever is borking the connection but I have no idea how this connection works.

It all goes well until brunch, when I get tons of errors about missing manifest xml's. I can browse to the folder where the xml file should be (the folder exists) but the folder is empty. Where am I supposed to get them??

EDIT: to be clear, this device has been dropped from LOS support. I have an installation zip and got the proprietary blobs tho...
