I'm about to receive a Van Rysel D500 indoor trainer with a Zwift cog mounted and zwift click. Planning of throwing my hard tail on there to get started.

I would like to know if anyone here has some solid advice for starting out in the electronic cycling world? What works? What doesn't? What keeps it interesting?

Bonus: I would love to self host a little group of climbs on one of the many compatible software, but happy to pay a bit if privacy is respected. Any advice here is also appreciated :)

If you ever have to deal with a bunch of writing, a €25 pair of good "automatic wire strippers" just make life that much easier.

Also just keeping 3 pencils and 2 permanent markers in every tool kit has saved me countless hours of searching.

A good box cutter and replacement Blades save similar amounts of headaches, and a good head lamp with a replaceable 18650 li-ion battery too.

Everything you post anywhere on the internet is public info. Doesn't matter if it's 4chan or Instagram. In my opinion though, Lemmy isn't large enough to warrant targeted data mining and user identification.

I do not discuss private details here and try and be as vague as possible in all posts. What you reveal is up to you.

I mean planned obsolescence, maybe... But data mining wasn't as profitable at the time and Facebook had just overtaken MySpace, so I would argue 2007 wasn't yet a race to the bottom in many aspects.

Can someone explain why the commentators on sky are saying Dowman's reaction isn't a red? Seemed clear enough to me.

Also getting a nice few words from Arteta on the way to an early shower...

    Prediction: we lose on penalties.

I'm looking for advice on setting up kiosks for a smart home.

I'd like to have 2-3 touch screens setup to control devices from.

    I've decided on the following:

    • preferably plug in devices/screens (with no battery)
    • e-ink screens would be preferable but not a must
    • cost is a factor

Anyone had success in setting up something similar?

I turned it off for 3 days and the difference was very noticeable.

No spending 2-3 minutes switching between servers to make a website work, no captchas before reading, no false "connection timed out" or "server blocked" notices.

Is everyone having the same experience, or am I doing something wrong?

*Oh but to add, any ads which slipped through unlock ended up being obviously better targeted, which I was repulsed by :)

*Edit: it looks like turning off Firefox's own DNS resolver managed to subside many of the captcha request, including for apps which are just browser overlays. Thanks @hansolo@lemmy.today :)

I typically avoid anything smart, but given practicality, I'm looking for general tips or recommendations for smart bulbs?

I have just started self-hosting home-assistant, and would prefer ones which integrate well with that.

What should I look out for when buying them? Any brands to avoid? Any cybersecurity concerns you've come across? Or should I avoid them altogether?

**Thanks everyone for the responses! I may not get back individually, but it's a great point to jump in from

I have a bathroom wall that we are currently renovating in a 60s built house and the budget has been eaten up quicker than expected... (but about as quick as should have been expected maybe).

We need to tackle most of the plastering ourselves. One wall which we removed the tiles from looks like the material in the right of this picture .

I have 3 questions and am grateful for feedback to any of these if you can help.

    1. has anyone any experience with plastering on this stuff? If so, am I on the right path with a binding undercoat and then lime-cement plaster, followed by sanding and painting?
    2. what time should realistically be planned for a 4m^2 wall?
    3. On one side, the wall borders plasterboard (yes, the proper wet-room stuff - the builders did most of that). How should the plasterboard wall be prepared, prior to filling and plastering the area near/adjoining it?

Bonus points if anyone has a solid book or reference for plastering. My library has little on this...

Ok, so I'm in need of some basics like USB cables, low ampage power adapters and all my local suppliers are overpriced IMO (€10+).

I feel that Amazon stuff is just repackaged AliExpress stuff, so I want to skip the middle-hand and buy directly from them.

Problem is, EVERYTHING on there seems like a massive scam (€0.15 for 5 etc). Is there any way to not end up with something potentially life threatening on AliExpress?

Asked a question on an annoyingly written post blaming the secretary of defence (or wtf ever the title is) for causing the loss of aircraft. Dude's an absolute idiot, but he didn't personally drive an F/A 18 into the largest body of water known to man.

I have no time for pointless inflammatory bullshit. Put your energy into a useful fight.

Unfortunately, as Lemmy doesn't appear to have an indexed search function I am not sure if this is a common question or not. Please point me to the necessary thread/s if this is answered elsewhere.

I'm looking to continue the ball rolling on my home server. Jellyfin setup was a nice dive back into networking, which I haven't done for quite some time and the logical next step is to get all the data we want to retain into a single hub.

Most searches seem to point to syncthing with nextcloud, but before I get started, I want to check I am really going in the right direction.

I would like to primarily remove the space burden from my devices and dump them all onto a few drives and a cloud backup (in case of physical loss of drives). I believe syncthing can do this, but some appear to say that it is not an effective archive tool.

I would like to be able to retrieve this data without much hassle for e.g. photo editing, and place the finished file back on the server. Preferably the local copy would be removed again, to reduce the need for extra space on each device. I would like to run this over nextcloud, but might be misunderstanding the software a bit.

Maybe I'm asking for too much here, but I'm looking for a less-scummy source to base my research off.

I like market-screener, but they are becoming frustrating trying to push towards higher paid plans. I rarely need much more than detailed price & dividend history, valuation ratios and broker consensus.

What are you using? What have you found? What would you never do again?
