It was common to have a headlight levelling dial for a period, I'd say from the 2000s up to mid-late 2010s. Prior to that most cars only had mechanical adjustments, post that most cars have auto levelling headlights - over a certain brightness this is legally required.

You might find a setting for headlight levelling buried in some car settings still but I don't recall a physical dial for this in cars I've driven from the last 5 years or more.

Note that this might be a country specific thing, particularly re. requirements for auto levelling (this is true in Australia at least).

I do like finding signs warning of a particularly specific problem, always makes one wonder who it was who caused the sign to be installed and how they feel about it. You'll often find that even generic signs like "Don't let items burn in the toaster" had a root cause in a specific incident (or string thereof).

I can second both of these suggestions - the acetone/ATF mix is effective and my Milwaukee 3/4" impact has undone some worse looking stuff than that even without penetrating fluid (it's also snapped the heads right off some similar diameter bolts when they refused to budge, which did at least allow me to continue so I counted that as a success).

Psionics was more popular in older sci fi, a few that come to mind are:

    • The Lensman series - one of the classics in sci fi, mental powers are very prominent.
    • The Tower and Hive series (also Dragonriders of Pern by the same author to a lesser extent as it's largely just telepathy in that series).
    • The Saga of Pliocene Exile series.

Read stuff written before the turn of the millennium if you're into this, I feel like it's become less and less common in sci fi as time progresses. I guess it's because mental powers - being effectively magic rather than technology - slot better into fantasy than sci fi in modern readers expectations.

In Australia that's not a comfortable amount to be living on monthly as your only income, but many people do survive on less.

It is however an awful lot of money to just give to someone, let alone as a monthly amount. If anyone is actually suggesting that it's not enough you should not trust their advice.

It's possible there is an option for that in the settings but no need to look for it if it's not obvious.

Instead just tell the machine to do a cycle set to hot, heavily soiled, and with an extra rinse (remember to add plenty of bleach and not put clothes in for this).

On mine it's literally a selection called 'Drum Clean'. A quick search suggests that another name that's used is 'Clean Machine'. It's basically just an automatic choice of what I've suggested though - a cycle as hot as the machine can do which you're expected to use a special cleaning tablet or bleach with.

Having to get the back open does seem like more of an effort than I'd probably go to for a machine I didn't own.

I'd ignore the filter for the moment if it's going to be difficult and try running a hot cycle with plenty of bleach on one of the machines (don't put any clothes in). Hopefully that will kill off whatever is making the machine smell. Some washers have a cycle setting specifically for cleaning the drum, if yours have this use that cycle (again with plenty of bleach).

I too would be trying to clean the washing machines you have first.

If you have no luck getting the owners to clean the machines pick one and try and get the filter out (usually accessible from the front, bring a bucket to catch water that might drain from it). The filter is usually a mesh screen that you can rinse under a tap. If it's not obvious where the filter is find the machine make/model and you can probably find the manual for it online which will say how to get to it.

Once you've cleaned the filter (or established it's not user accessible) proceed to dump a good bit of bleach in the machine and set it to run through the hottest cycle possible while empty. You should then end up with one machine which is clean enough to use, whether you do the same with the others is up to you.

The better solution is getting a sparkie to install a male socket (with protective cover) for power inlet if you're anticipating needing a genset on any regular basis. While they're at it get them to also install an isolating switch so you can easily avoid backfeeding power into the grid while keeping the house powered.
