Ok, well then there's no point doing it at all. If the Democrats have 270 safe electoral votes, then they don't need a compact, don't want a compact, and won't even feel obligated to hold themselves to its terms. They can just use their existing electoral college majority to elect the Democratic president they want, regardless of the NPV totals.
If the NPVIC want to be taken seriously, they need to ignore Democrat majority states, and exclusively lobby the safe conservative states. As long it's marketed as the Never Elect Another Republican Interstate Compact, and sold exclusively to states who think that's a good idea, it paradoxically can only be used to do the exact opposite and elect a Republican who otherwise would have lost. Until the movement gets significant bipartisan support, I see fundamentally four cases:
- The compact does nothing because the majority threshold isn't reached.
- The compact does nothing because the Democrat wins all the compact states and the national popular vote and the electoral vote is unchanged.
- The Democrat candidate wins an electoral majority from the compact states, but loses the popular vote. All the compact states vote for the Republican as the compact requires.
- Same as 3, but the compact states allege voting irregularities in Idaho and unanimously agree to not count those votes so that the compact states can vote Democrat like they would have done without the compact.
I've been known to complain about ranked voting advocates who promote IRV for features it doesn't have, but this form of strategic nomination is one thing IRV does defend against. I'd consider this a dirty trick if they did it here, but all Alaskans have to do is rank the Dans Sullivan consecutively on their ballots (in either order). Then Dan Sullivan can't be eliminated until he gets re-eliminated after getting votes transferred from the first eliminated Dan Sullivan.

Dollars to donuts originated in an age when a dollar could buy a considerable quantity of donuts. Inflation has since reduced the literal interpretation of the expression to nearly even odds.

I had a housemate apologize in advance for the poor behavior of his guests later that night. I don't think I formally rejected it, but I certainly wasn't impressed. So you know this is going to upset me enough to warrant an apology, but you're won't be addressing your behavior, or your friends, you're just going to do it anyway, with a clean conscience because you've already apologized?
Update: Tennessee fucks up another "lethal" injection. https://wpln.org/post/tennessee-set-to-carry-out-rare-execution-of-a-woman/
The filing said the execution began around 8 p.m., that two syringes of pentobarbital were administered, and that Pike maintained a heartbeat and was heard audibly snoring.
Media witnesses report being unable to view what was taking place. They were able to hear groans, moans and snoring for more than 40 minutes before they were escorted out.
I don't know if they got bad drugs, or if it was some other form of incompetence, but this is not okay. Time to abandon lethal injection altogether if we can't do it better than this. Firing squad like she proposed is probably one of the better methods if Tennessee wants to remain in the capital punishment business. Yes, you'd have to clean up blood, but that's often what happens when you kill people. Let's stop euphemistically pretending we're "putting her to sleep."
For the next one, that is. I think surviving a botched execution attempt should get her sentence commuted.
Cultural malice can certainly cause offense, but to me cultural appropriation is a distinctly different offence, due specifically to willful ignorance. When cultural symbols have a very specific meaning, and are misused as vaguely exotic, people of that culture, who know those symbols and see them being used ignorantly and improperly, and now know that you didn't really care about their culture, couldn't even be bothered to ask anybody or look up how to use them authentically.
As a non-example, I don't consider it cultural appropriation when culture when I eat tacos, assuming I eat them for the same reason the Mexicans do -- their people's food is better than my people's food.
Sometimes I walk around town late at night. Last week I saw a guy with a sleeping bag napping in the park gazebo. He wasn't bothering me or anyone, so I just let him be.
It's enough to keep an individual housed and fed, but you'd probably have to go on the dole to treat a serious medical issue. I wouldn't want to have to raise a family on it. I would not consider it a good income by local community standards.
