I'm old enough to remember when they tried to convert us to metric. I can tell you why.

People tried to force it on us and we don't need the metric system for daily use. Trying to force people to use it isn't going to work. Now, personally, I'd prefer if measurements on rulers and in cars were still given in both systems.

Metric advocates tend to be smug and insulting towards anyone not using the metric system. I have seen this myself more than once. Calling a whole nation stupid because they use a different but functional system of measurement is hardly a good strategy for converting them to your system.

I learned the metric system in school. I understand that the metric system is superior in many sciences. I have strong interests in anthropology. And here I am at 55 and I have never, not once, needed to use metric. Bone measurements are often given in metric but it's not such a big issue that I need to wholly convert to metric.

My question is, what's the big deal? Is the metric system a religion? I've seen evangelical Christians less intent on converting people. Why?

I looked at at crime rates in American cities in 2012. The highest was in Flint, Michigan, which still has a lead pipe problem.

The Romans ate off of lead plates and enjoyed watching gladiators fight, women being raped by animals and other atrocities in the Coliseum. I've read dissertations that perpetuated the idea that lead poisoning was a major factor in this cultural phenomenon.

I was born in 1971 and grew up breathing lead fumes in a large city. Yes, I believe leaded gasoline and lead paint have been a serious problem.

East Meets Southwest: Discard packet. Combine about 3/4 cup salsa (a whole cup if salsa is chunky) and 2 teaspoons soy sauce. May add about 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, if desired. Cook noodles, drain and add to sauce.

I've made this since the late 90s. If you like both Southwestern and Asian cuisines, you might like this.

My mother used to say "If wishes were horses," and I had no idea where that came from. I didn't get internet until after her death in 2001. I looked up that saying and the complete version is, " If wishes were horses then beggars would ride. " Apparently, it's a very old saying so I guess adults weren't always gross.

Fedora. About 20 years ago I installed Fedora on my spare PC. I don't remember the exact date but I can tell you the Fedora version was Yarrow. Yeah, a long time ago.

Anyways, my Fedora Yarrow installation worked great for less than 2 days. One update and I suddenly didn't have internet. The Fedora maintainers decided to drop the driver for my ethernet card even though that particular hardware had existed for only 3 years. I was furious! WTF are you doing dropping drivers for 3 yo hardware?! Yes I can reinstall the driver but I shouldn't have needed to. Linux has always had a hardware support problem and they were dropping drivers for hardware that wasn't even 5 years old.

I've ran mostly Debian -based distros since and never had a similar problem. And I know that it's petty and even silly after all this time but I'm never touching Fedora again.
