The Russian military suffered record casualties in Ukraine last month, with more than 54,000 troops killed and heavily wounded, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Kyiv's forces have regained more territory than Russia was able to seize for the second month running, including losing territory in the key eastern Donbas region.

Russia has gained less than 1,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since the beginning of this year, a sharp decline from the same period last year, according to a Ukrainian open-source collective.

If you view the establishment as just the west, yeah sure, but by that logic you could call RT and SCMP anti-establishment which I really wouldn’t.

I guess I conceptualise the establishment as the main news actors that set the narrative inside and outside the west.

(btw I’m not saying Al Jazeera isn’t valuable as a source, I’m just really sceptical of calling it alt media unless you’re taking a purely western perspective on what is alt media and what isn’t)

Curious why Al Jazeera is included as alt media?

Surely it is part of the global media establishment. The biggest state owned international news website in the middle east.

As police try to suppress anti-corruption protests by young Albanians, Prime Minister Edi Rama is claiming that "antifa" is behind the unrest. Few are buying that explanation.

“oh no, anti-fascists are behind the protests against me”

Broski, what does that say about you????

I think there should be instances that block ML. But personally I prefer using the piefed instance block feature.

It’s weird that there’s no instance that has a default block of the triad with good uptime. lemmy.cafe worked great back when I had an account there maybe 1.5-2 years ago. Didn’t know it’s had major issues since.

Flights to unknown countries in Africa are scheduled as early as Wednesday, relatives detail

Relatives of gravely ill detainees at two Florida immigration jails say authorities are about to deport their loved ones to unknown countries in Africa despite worsening medical conditions.

Flights are scheduled as early as Wednesday, according to the families and the immigration advocacy group the Workers Circle, which has been monitoring conditions and speaking with detainees inside two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in south Florida.

The group said multiple sick detainees with varying conditions had been targeted for imminent deportation, and learned about the operation only in the last few days.

“I received a call from several detainees letting me know that men were being pulled in to interviews with deportation agents, where they were being informed that because of their medical conditions, Mexico would not be accepting their entry, and they will be sent to Africa,” Arianne Betancourt, the group’s immigrant rights organizer, said at a Tuesday night press conference.

“We know that once they are deported and sent to these third countries, they are not receiving medical care in detention. They have difficulties getting medicine.”

The affected detainees are at the Krome North processing center in Miami, which was found to be experiencing severe overcrowding by a government inspector’s report last month, and the Broward transitional center in Pompano Beach. Both facilities are privately run on behalf of ICE.

During the early stages of the Iraq War, members of the United States Army and the Central Intelligence Agency committed a series of human rights violations and war crimes against detainees in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. These abuses included physical abuse, sexual humiliation, physical and psychological torture, and rape, as well as the killing of Manadel al-Jamadi and the desecration of his body.[4][5][6][7] The abuses came to public attention with the publication of photographs by CBS News in April 2004, causing shock and outrage and receiving widespread condemnation within the United States and internationally.[8]

'Where the wealthiest country in the world allocates money has always been a question of political will over political way’

The United States once led most other nations on resettling refugees from all over the world. But in the fiscal year 2025- 2026, except for three people from Afghanistan, all of the 10,258 people admitted through resettlement were white South Africans.
