You know what, I didn't even think about that! I'm not sure I can pick out where that second moment happens, if it's an audio cue then my hearing is bad enough that I'm not catching the difference.

Well, I rather mean that they should be able to breathe both water and air, as they have both gills and lungs, but this mermaid was visibly suffocating in the air. And that ability to speak through the water and glass is a telepathic connection for sure! It was somehow established after that mermaid's bite. And it even happens again at 12:35.

If you mean that they'd be freshwater, a lot of fiction ignores the difficulty of transitioning between saltwater and freshwater. The thing that bothered me more is how they're able to speak through the water and glass of the aquarium.

That conjunction of horror and deep emotional connection was stunningly amazing! I thought mermaids should be dipnoan, though...
