I recently got back into board games (thanks Tabletop Simulator!) and I found a couple Weird West board games while browsing boardgamegeek. Has anyone played these games? Have you found others you would recommend? I'm mostly interested in co-op games but that isn't a hard rule.

I haven't played any of these but so far I've found:

  • Shadows of Brimstone - This seems to be the most popular board game when it comes to a Weird West setting since it has about a hundred expansion packs. It's co-op (so I'm interested) but the rules might be a bit too complex for my simple mind. I'm curious about this one.
  • Grimslingers - First of all, I'd just like to say that "Grimslingers" is a fantastic name. I think this one is primarily a card game but it has both a co-op and versus mode and the rules seem less complex than Shadows of Brimstone, so again, I'm intrigued.
  • Dracula's America: Shadows of the West - "It is 1875, and Count Dracula is President of the United States of America." Now that's an attention-grabbing intro! I think this might actually be a game that uses miniatures from Shadows of Brimstone to set up its own wargaming scnearios. So I think it's just a rulebook and you're expected to provide your own miniatures to setup a game.
  • Grim West - This game came out in 2026. I guess it's a wargame that uses a standard deck of cards? I can't tell if buying this game just gives you the rulebook or if it requires anything more than a single deck of cards. I think the "game" might just be a single pdf rulebook?

This is what happens when I just blindly browse boardgamegeek. I come across games that sound like they have a cool aesthetic or setting but then I can't tell if it's a board game, a card game, or just a rulebook. That's why I wanted to reach out to this community and see if anyone can give me actual recommendations.

I'm not sure if this really qualifies as Weird West but it's kind of a spooky Western song and I always like stumbling on something that reminds me of this community.

In a lawless Steampunk West overrun by brutal outlaws, machines, and supernatural terrors, a father is forced to become judge, jury, and executioner—knowing that every act of justice meant to protect his family may ultimately cost him the very people he’s fighting to save.

The Dark West looks like it should be everything I want from a Weird West game. It's a top-down twin-stick shooter with action RPG elements. And it isn't a roguelike! Unfortunately, I tried playing the demo a couple months ago and the game just didn't feel "fun" to me. I don't remember any specific complaints I had, only that the moment-to-moment gameplay loop felt tedious. The developers say there'll be an updated demo during the Steam Next Fest on October 19 though so I'm looking forward to trying it again. Hopefully I'll have a better impression this time. I still want to like this game but my expectations are set more realistically now. Anyway, here's a new trailer.

The first trailer made this look like a fun little Weird West FPS. This new trailer shows a lot of game mechanics and they all look too complex for my tastes. Check your codex to find each enemy's weak spot? Pick a specific bullet in the chamber for a specific attribute? I'm sure there are people who will love that level of detail in a game but it's too much for me. But hey, at least there's a demo now. Maybe I should try it for myself rather than just complain.

This game looks a little too cartoony for my tastes but maybe others here will be interested? It already has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam so they must be doing something right.

3 months ago was the reveal trailer, now we have a teaser trailer. And I'm even more excited for this game. Best of all, it isn't a roguelike! I didn't think that was possible anymore!

I've mentioned this game a couple times already. It's a souls-like made to look like a SNES zelda game. Well, it now has a release date of March 31, 2026 and they also updated the demo.

One thing I find really interesting is that the dev mentioned on reddit that the souls-like elements can be tweaked for those who aren't looking for a souls-like game. You can disable the "corpse run" mechanic and adjust the amount of damage you give/take. That makes this game sound even better to me since I'm terrible at souls-likes. I'm definitely going to try out this new demo.

I don't intentionally leave this Lemmy community unattended for months at a time, it's just really hard to find anything to talk about in the Weird West genre. Of course, that's on me for creating a Lemmy community dedicated to a sub-micro-niche genre.

Anyway, this trailer is exactly the type of thing that made me want to create this community in the first place. Because I'd have nowhere else to share a game like this. This looks like everything I want from the genre and I can't wait to play it. Yay!

I've been debating whether I should post about this game. The cover image has a creepy dude with a cowboy hat and pistol but I'm not sure if the game is actually a Weird Western. The level design looks more like it takes place in the ruins of an ancient civilization. But, I've been neglecting this community too much so I wanted to post something. I guess they were right when they said this genre was too niche to justify its own Lemmy community...

Anyway, BloodRush: Undying Wish is a top-down shooter, which I enjoy. And it reminds me of a mix between Kill The Crows and Akane, both of which I enjoyed. Obviously it's a roguelike (since every indie game is required to be a rogulike these days) but there's a demo available so you can give it a try if you're even remotely interested.

Some of it gets repetitive, or it's just a hook over and over, but it has a great feel.
