Put on by Shake & Stir Theatre Company in Brisbane, Australia.

I saw them 10 years ago, last time they put on Dracula. And since then this has remained the benchmark by which I measure all adaptations of Stoker's novel. The performances, the atmosphere, the set design were all top notch.

I saw the 6:00 pm showing, but especially for Halloween they had another one starting at 10:00 pm.

Last time I saw it, I very nearly didn't. Honestly, the posters did not make it look enticing. I thought it would be an attempt at a hip modern adaptation, taking aesthetic cues from later Anne Rice or Vampire Diaries type stories. I decided to take a chance and bought tickets to the last possible show, and it was almost sold out already.

Cast photo of Dracula wearing a leather suit

But I couldn't have been more wrong. Aesthetically it is a perfect adaptation. It felt very authentically like how I picture the novel in my head. Dracula does wear a leather jacket after he turns young, but with the fog and lighting and the distance to the stage, it doesn't actually feel like doing a modern hip take, and instead just felt like a practical way to show how Dracula has gotten younger and stronger upon departing Transylvania.

Tonally, it worked great. Some of the abridgements detracted a bit from some of the themes. There was some lip service to theme of modernity vs ancient superstition, but it really gets de-emphasised compared to the novel. But it also played up to a greater extent are the sexual themes, making the vampire's bite and possession come across as deeply sexually-charged. Not a unique take by any means, but it helps reinforce what's there in the novel about sex and sexuality.

Unfortunately, they wrote out Quincy Morris entirely, and Arthur Holmwood is mentioned but never seen. But instead of coming across kinda naive as Lucy in the book does to modern audiences, the play leaned into the idea of her as sexually promiscuous, reinforcing the difference between her and Mina. Instead of being long-time friends with the future Lord Godalming, in this play, Lucy is portrayed as having been all-but-engaged with Dr Seward, before she suddenly meets Arthur and then gets engaged quite quickly. A change that bothers me from an "I want the adaptation to hue as close to the original as possible" perspective, but which on deeper inspection I actually rather like, because in the original novel it's a bit of a stretch to read her as promiscuous, and with other cuts made for time and casting reasons (with just 6 actors, the cast was already doubling roles—both of the women double as Dracula's brides, and van Helsing is also Renfield, who is only ever seen through a cell window—the lack of Quincy and Arthur really makes sense), this change really helps.

Dr Seward takes the place of Quincy as the character who dies in the final encounter, which prompted some comments afterwards from someone in the row in front of me. "Jack took Quincy's death.[...] What did they do to my boy Quincy!?"

Last time I saw it, I had not yet read the novel. I knew the story only through cultural osmosis plus from sitting in the pit of my high school production of Frank Wildhorn's Dracula: The Musical. And in the pit you get only the vaguest idea of what's actually going on on stage (I still have absolutely no idea wtf Oklahoma was about). Now I've read the book twice and seen multiple film adaptations, and I can confidently say that this play remains my favourite. If you happen to be in or near Brisbane and tickets are still available, or if you happen to be able to get to Brisbane in 2036 or thereabouts when I assume they'll be putting this on again, I highly recommend it. 9/10.

And do his minions count as contractors or employees (thus requiring payroll taxes & insurance)? Does bestowing eternal life on someone mean the recipient is liable for capital gains tax? These questions and more, the Count must face!

As Irish tax law does not recognize "undeath" as an excuse or mitigation, that won't help Dracula with the Irish Revenue Commisssioners. (You're not Apple, Vlad!)

A novelty promotion idea from the pressbook for the vampire film Blacula (1972): a DIY vampire protection kit consisting of leaves from the "Transylvanian Bat-Laurel /laurus vampyrus" (in reality, just ordinary bay leaves).

Blacula is the film in this Sunday's #ReMonsterdon watch party on Mastodon.

Let me start by saying I know very little about Vampire: The Masquerade and I don't play visual novels. But all three Vampire: The Masquerade visual novels went on sale as a bundle for $5 so I figured I could give them a try. Now I want to share my thoughts.

The first game, Coteries of New York was a good introduction to the trilogy for me. I think it set the right expectations. I got to enter a name I wanted my character to be called and I got to pick between 3 different vampire clans. I don't know how much variation there really was in the story, but the game made me feel like I was roleplaying. That is, the game might give me a choice between "be a jerk" and "be polite" and even though either answer would result in me obtaining the same information, it felt like I had agency. The game also ended on a bit of a cliffhanger so I was curious to see where the story would go next. I was surprisingly impressed by my first visual novel experience and was interested to continue.

The next game, Shadows of New York was a total letdown in comparison. Suddenly I don't get to pick a name, I don't get to pick a clan, and instead I have to follow this one specific character's story. Also, rather than giving me a choice between three dialog options anytime a character talked to me, this character always responded on her own. Most of the time when I was given a choice, the result didn't even matter. Like, I'd get to choose what she said to herself as inner monologue but not what she said out loud. Or when given a choice for what to say out loud, my choices were: "What?", "...What?", or "Huh?". So my decision was irrelevant. At the end of the story, my character left the city behind to start her new life with her girlfriend. And I got the "Bad Ending" achievement. I wasn't sure how "they lived happily ever after" was a bad ending so I had to google what I did wrong. Apparently during the game I was given 3 actual choices of what to do. If I chose to hold onto my humanity, this resulted in the "bad" ending. Instead, if I decided to be a jerk and step on everyone in my path, the girlfriend would die but the main character would gain a seat of power. And since I was told her vampire clan were a bunch of back-stabbing self-centered jerks, I apparently didn't roleplay the character "correctly". Bullshit. I don't know much about V:tM but I'm pretty sure a major aspect of it is how long you can hold onto your humanity. So I didn't like this game. The story was fine, but it felt like I had less agency in the game.

The third game, Reckoning of New York, was a bit of a mix between the two. The character's name and clan was picked for me again, but I was given more actual choices that once again made me feel like I had agency. Except there's only one ending to this game so my choices didn't actually matter. Weird. The story is about two characters who were assigned to each other at the beginning of the game and after you finish it, you unlock the ability to play the game again as the other character. I read online that apparently this other character's storyline can have two endings but I didn't feel like replaying the entire game from someone else's perspective just to see how it could turn out differently. I guess I could watch a youtube video of the endings, but I don't actually care that much.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about the trilogy. I very quickly got used to a text-only adventure (no voice work at all) and I liked the artwork shown as you moved through the story. Plus, the stories were engaging enough that I was interested in finishing all three games. They're only loosely connected though. In the second game, they mention a weird vampire from a year ago who did some things then disappeared. And that's all the resolution we get from the first game's storyline. Then in the third game, they apparently took the "Good Ending" of the second game because the character you played as is now at a seat of power. That's fine I guess; they had to pick one of the endings to stick with. But this means the only real connection between the games were basically easter eggs so you could play any of the three games in isolation and not lose anything. The first game is definitely the best though.

You can buy the entire trilogy as a bundle, which regularly goes on sale for 85% off. At 4-5 hours of gameplay per game, I don't regret my time (or money) spent. Also, it looks like a new V:tM visual novel will be released later this year, Oaths & Ashes. I'll probably play that too when it goes on sale. So despite my mixed feelings on this trilogy as a whole, I'm still interested in V:tM and visual novels in general to play more of them.

Cross-posted from !fullmoviesonyoutube@piefed.social. I usually post these announcements on !bmoviebonanza@lemmy.world but I'm posting this here because it's about VAMPIRES!!?!! (specifically it's an adaptation of Matheson's "I Am Legend")

It is 1968, and Dr. Robert Morgan lives in a world where everyone else has been infected by a plague that has turned them into undead, vampiric creatures that cannot stand sunlight, fear mirrors, and are repelled by garlic.

...

Although the film was not considered a success upon its release, it later gained a more favorable reputation as a classic of the genre.[11] As of February 2025, The Last Man on Earth holds an 80% rating at the film review aggregator Web site Rotten Tomatoes from 30 reviews.[12] Phil Hall of Film Threat called The Last Man on Earth "the best Vincent Price movie ever made".[11]

Among the less favorable reviews, Steve Biodrowski of Cinefantastique felt the film was "hampered by an obviously low budget and some poorly recorded, post-production dubbing that creates an amateurish feel, undermining the power of its story",[13] while Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader remarked, "Some would consider this version better than the 1971 remake with Charlton Heston, The Omega Man, but that isn't much of an achievement".
