Stix, Baer and Fuller FC had a real stranglehold on the USOC in the 30s

The city of St. Louis is no stranger to winning this competition, so it's only fitting that the first trophy in the history of the MLS club, which began play in 2023, is the U.S. Open Cup. Between 1920 and 1988, the city of St. Louis won the Open Cup 10 times, with the Busch Seniors being the most recent to win in 1988 before St. Louis City SC ended the drought. Edelman summed up what it meant to everyone.

The weird thing is that no one is compelling the teams or MLS to make these policies, they are just volunteering this shit. They come out on their own to quash political dissent. The capital holders know where their bread is buttered.

Promising signs from a government minister?

“I strongly believe the Whitecaps are going to stay,” Dix said. “This is a historic year. I’m a regular fan, regularly attend the games. I’ve worked and met with Mr. Schuster. I expect, as you would expect, such discussions between the government and the Whitecaps are ongoing. But I am confident that we’re going to come to a resolution that’s going to see the Whitecaps in place for a long time and that’s a good thing for everybody in Vancouver.”

    Sports are inherently political

MLS isn’t alone in trying to make it a reality. Most of the other American major leagues try just as hard to stay neutral in any matter that may cost them a few dollars by upsetting fans, or draw the ire of their overwhelmingly conservative owners. Then again, few sports seem to have hardcore fans as politically engaged as those in American soccer.

What is Jozy doing in this article at all? He had an extremely successful career for a US men’s soccer player

They weren’t all failures. Several had solid professional careers. Altidore had a highly productive spell on the United States men’s national team – he is still its third all-time leading scorer, behind Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey. His club resume, however, amounts to two good seasons in the Netherlands and half a dozen strong campaigns in Major League Soccer, after he had been discarded by five different European clubs.

I guess this means the new cash transfer mechanism has effectively raised the salary cap

This summer brought MLS to more than $410m spent on trades and transfers in 2026, which is more than double the 2023 total. Much of this growth came between 2024 and 2025, with the cash-for-player system accounting for $41m in transfers that were not previously possible. The introduction of this rule has not replaced GAM spending, but rather complemented it. MLS allows clubs to convert up to $3m in eligible transfer revenue to GAM per year, and the introduction of the cash-for-player rule has made hitting that $3m mark significantly easier. The end result: there’s much more GAM circulating the league now, enabling more teams to buy down cap hits, complete trades and do everything else a team can do with those funds.

I would be excited if the Sounders were in ninth place 😢

“I’m never going to be excited about being in ninth place,” he said. “Because I’ve seen the levels that this club has hit over the last seven, eight years, and [was] lucky enough to be a part of a couple of those really special seasons. And that’s the target that we set as a club, as a team: We want to be competing for home playoff spots, competing for Supporters’ Shields.”

I had no idea he was already linked to City. I don't follow up-and-coming players or youth potentials at all, so I hadn't heard of him until he started blowing up the last month. Crazy that we have a 16 year old in the US already signed to a PL club.

I did not realize how much of the Union’s offense ran through him

That’s true in games, too. Sullivan takes 10.3% of his team’s touches, the most of any teenage MLS winger in at least a decade. Second place is Alphonso Davies, now of Bayern Munich, the best homegrown player the league has ever produced.

    LFG

The tournament has seen several improvements in recent years, including the doubling of prize money to $1 million in 2025. The Open Cup media rights were also sold to CBS for 2025 and 2026.

Bogert doesn't disclose the fee, but we can at least infer it'll be in excess of $7m

Whittaker joined Boro for a fee around $9.5 million (£7 million) in January 2025 from Plymouth Argyle. He excelled last season with 14 goals and seven assists in 40 appearances.

    $12m ain't nothin

St. Louis is expected to pay in the region of $12 million, those sources told The Athletic on condition of anonymity because the deal is not yet finalized, which would be a new record deal between MLS clubs. While broad terms are set, multiple details still must be ironed out to complete the trade.
