Hello there PieFed.zip admins!

The mod for c/sustainability has gone AWOL, strangely around the time the password reset happened 🤔

Through what I'm sure is an absolute coincidence, that happens to be around the same time I made this account 🤔

There's probably an Obiwan/Ben Kenobi meme that sums this situation up perfectly, but IDK about those sorts of things. What I do know (with what some may consider an alarming degree of certainty) is that the former mod will not be returning any time soon, so I would be happy to moderate that community in their stead.

Realistically I dont think a mod action has ever been required in that community, so it could probably coast indefinitely, but I'm happy to take on the responsibility of watching out for any funny business.

It has not been syncing with this community. Even when I try to remote grab a post, ex https://sh.itjust.works/post/69392437, it fails

Hi for a bit there have been duplicates of "fediverse", "gaming", "science" and "technology" in the list of topics under the explore menu.

Here's a screenshot:
riPQck1OdS6Zxd1.png

According to old.piefed.zip the old (duplicates that have lower amounts of communities and no sub-topics) have IDs: /topic/6 (fediverse), /topic/1 (gaming), /topic/9 (science), /topic/3 (technology)

My scheduled posts are not actually posting. Could easily be user error. They seem to show in my post count, but they are not appearing anywhere.

Could be account age (had to refresh on the password reset), but I'm lacking the ability to test that theory at the moment.

It could also be recent API changes borked something on the back end.

Or it could easily be operator error. I scheduled for my time zone, and I'm pretty sure I got the dates right, but you know what, it's been a long week.

Just curious whether or not I'm alone here.

I'm having trouble seeing !buyselltrade@lemmy.sdf.org from my Piefed.zip and Lemmy.zip accounts in Voyager. Piefed.zip can see posts from 7 months ago, but not new ones and Lemmy.zip can't even find the community.

If I use an old .world account I can see the current posts in Voyager no problem, so that tells me it probably isn't Voyager.

I can see recent posts from other communities like !funhole@lemmy.sdf.org so I'm assuming the instance is federating properly.

old.piefed.zip - new frontend in beta Piefed.zip! (old.piefed.zip)

Hi all,

Many of you may be aware of the "old" front ends from some lemmy instances that replicates reddit's old style. I've translated it over to Piefed, at old.piefed.zip.

It's very much in beta, so if you do use it please let me know of any issues or bugs.

Thanks

Demigodrick

!anime@ani.social on piefed.zip seems to be out of sync by a day or so, new posts from the past day are not showing up and votes are not federated. Lemmy.zip seems to be up to date.

Not sure if it is happening on other communities, just a heads up.

balatro@piefed.social has a animated gif as community logo:

When viewing it from piefed.zip the cached image isn't animated:

Hello over there 👋

I'm considering switching over to your instance and I was wondering if there is a way to know which content settings are enabled for this instance.
I learned about them in this thread and I didn't find a way to see them as a non-admin.

Thx,
hundertzwoelf

I have nothing against Blorp, I do have something against an ad in a link when I share something.

Why does piefed.zip have an ad for Blorp when I share a link?

I tested on two browsers, the latter without any "protection" or addons, and I tried the same post on a Lemmy instance, where it's fine. It's clearly not happening on my side, and OP didn't do anything wrong either.

Here's the short dialog we just had.

Blorp not fully loading in piefed.zip Piefed.zip! (media.piefed.zip)

Is that just on my end? Blorp seems to work fine on piefed.social from what I've tested.

Edit: it's now working on my end.

Hello all,

Server has been upgraded - there will probably be fluctuations in performance as things catch back up, and I'll also be tweaking database performance, so there may be brief periods where there are disconnects.

Thanks for you patience :)

Demigodrick

Original message:

Hello all,

I'm going to boost the performance of the server so I am prewarning you all that there is likely to be some downtime between 20:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC while we perform the upgrade.

Its only an incremental server performance upgrade, but should allow things to feel a bit snappier.

Thanks

When I try to purge a post that I've deleted, I get the following message: "An unexpected error has occurred".

Is purging not available on piefed.zip?

Images broken when using VPN Piefed.zip! (piefed.zip)

In this case, I was connected to an ATL, US exit node on Mullvad. When connected, almost all images were broken. Disconnecting the VPN and refreshing resulted in working images.

Before I run off and create a ticket for Piefed, I would like to see if I can narrow this down: is it my account, the instance, or the piefed server software?

For about a week, I've been unable to vote via any Lemmy client. I've tried Summit, Blorp, and Voyager; the error report from Summit is:

zgqBUlPNwM4lho4.jpg

but the failure happens on all clients. I can vote through the web app with no issue.

My gut instinct is that it's an issue with the server software, and in particular related to a recent API change, but before I go off filing tickets: can anyone else confirm they can successfully vote on a Lemmy post or comment, using a mobile app logged into their piefed.zip account?

I'm trying to join !BigAnimeTiddies@lemmynsfw.com, but I'm unable to add it through the Communities > Add remote community feature. I'm only getting an error that says "Community not found."

I've already unblocked LemmyNSFW.com from my profile, and I was able to join other NSFW communities from that instance. Just not this one specifically.

Anyone got a clue what's going on?

I mainly use Voyager to browse piefed.zip, both on desktop (through https://vger.app/) and on iOS (through the app store app).

Since a few days ago, the 3 dots menu on the top right (that contains the create new post command) became disabled in any community page. It happens on every community I tried to read.

This happens on both desktop and mobile on piefed.zip when I'm logged in (not when logged out, but of course I can't post if I'm logged out), but not on piefed.social (logged out or logged in).

I'm not sure if there is something wrong with my user profile, or if it is something with the version of PieFed running on piefed.zip (which is newer than that of piefed.social). @demigodrick@lemmy.zip would you mind looking into this please?

Is anyone else using Voyager here, and is it working for you? Thanks.

Possibly related:

I looked in the browser debug console when I go to this URL

https://vger.app/posts/piefed.zip/c/home

and it is returning 400 for this API call when I'm logged in:

GET https://piefed.zip/api/alpha/community?name=home

This is the JSON response.

{"code":400,"message":"error - unknown community. Please wait a sec and try again.","status":"Bad Request"}

This does not make sense as home is a valid community on piefed.zip, and it keeps happening even if I reload the page.

Hello!

Welcome to Piefed.zip's August update for 2025!

As Piefed is still relatively new to us (and admittedly currently underutilised by us) I'm going to be talking a lot about what I plan to do.

However, we'll start with what we've done so far.

Firstly, all the legal policies are in place. I've updated the About page with links to all of the policies, including Ts & Cs, privacy, and code of conduct. This is particularly important, and I will talk more about this in September with joint messaging across all of our platforms, but Piefed.zip is now technically owned by DotZip Ltd, a non-profit entity (owned by me) designed to properly and transparently run our sites.

This doesn't mean much day to day, but it does mean I've enshrined that all donations must be spent on running the platforms by law . So hopefully that's a positive thing.

Server updates

Right, so what we're looking to do going forwards!

We're working on "completing" ZippyBot for Lemmy, and once that is in place, we'll port it over to Piefed using the API (which is still in development). This will give community mods the same (if not more) ability to manage their communities via the web interface. Piefed is already REALLY GOOD at providing lots of options, so Zippy won't need to be as complex as it is on Lemmy.

We added the Blorp frontend - blorp.piefed.zip

We're working on a custom theme. It will be yellowish.

I'm trying to keep Piefed.zip relatively up to date too. The updates are very different to Lemmy, in that they're pushed out much more frequently (we're following the dev builds rather than waiting for bigger updates, so you get the features faster).

Also on the lookout for a custom logo now too - if you fancy trying to make one, let me know ;)

Donations

If you use Piefed.zip a lot, and fancy helping us to keep it running, we'd appreciate a small donation.

For now, we're collecting all donations under our OpenCollective page, with full transparency around income and expenditure.

We've also put up a link to our Ko-Fi page where you can donate via paypal instead of using a card. All Ko-Fi donations will be totalled up and added to OpenCollective each month for transparency.

Please remember, traditional social media is only "free" to you because they sell your data. We don't do that - if you want to support independent social websites like this one and you value your privacy, please consider a small donation. It really does help.

Moderator recruitment

We'd love to recruit a moderator or two. You'll help us to check reports, but also build communities and correctly tag them, so new users can onboard easier. If you fancy helping out, please drop me a pm here, on lemmy, or an email to hello@piefed.zip.

All that's left for me to say is thank you for being here!

Please feel free to reach out to me at any time if you have any questions, and I hope to see you all around the fediverse soon!

Thanks

Blorp - New Piefed.zip Frontend! Piefed.zip! (blorp.piefed.zip)
submitted 1 year ago by to c/home@piefed.zip

Hi all,

A new front end has popped up! Blorp is a desktop and mobile UI you can try out right now!

Blorp even has a Lemmy community - !blorp@lemmy.ml, if you try it out I'm sure the dev would love some feedback :)

You can access it via blorp.piefed.zip (and, if you're reading this on Lemmy.zip, you can access it via blorp.lemmy.zip!).

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend! :)

Hi All,

Just like Lemmy, I'll be trying to do a monthly server update to go over what we're doing with Piefed and how its all going.

As it stands, Piefed is in very active development with much more frequent smaller releases, and so we are more frequently updating the site to make sure we get all the fixes and features in.

Because of this, you might get more frequent downtime, but this shouldn't last very long.

If you're wondering, we're using a hetzner VPS (same as we did when we started Lemmy.zip all that time ago!) to figure out what resource we need. Because of this, we can leverage Hetzner's very easy backup solution, which is a big positive.

We also have images stored in cloud buckets on backblaze just like lemmy, so this helps keep the storage on the actual server down.

Just like Lemmy, I'll be posting some graphs and charts and stuff. In case you're interested, both our Lemmy server and this server are connected over VPN so we can use the same backend tools in one place instead of duplicating them in two places. Makes it much easier to get all our info together! We're also running Piefed in docker.

So here's the graphs!

Cloudflare overview over the last 30 days:

So, that gives a brief overview of the server. Happy to take any questions. I'll try and do these on or around the 15th of each month, and keep the Lemmy.zip ones on or around the 1st of the month.

Thanks!

Hello all,

Just a quick message to let you all know we are beavering away in the background to get things set up, as Piefed releases more features.

So you're aware, we now have a suite of legal documents in place:

Code of Conduct
Cookie Policy
Defederation Policy
Donation Policy
Privacy Policy
Terms of Service

You can see all of these on the about page at any time too.

We also have all of the backend stuff set up, including the hello@piefed.zip email address.

We hope you're enjoying Piefed.zip, please let us know if you need anything.

PS we'll be doing regular server updates, just like we do at lemmy.zip. Rather than the start of the month, we'll be posting these on or around the middle of the month!

Thanks,

Demigodrick

Welcome to Piefed.zip! 🥳🎉🎊

This instance is run by the same team as Lemmy.zip, with the same moderation and federation principles.

This is a general purpose instance for anyone.

Please bear with us as we get everything working and all our policies in place.

If you have any questions please let us know!
