Hello all,

After last month's very small update, I think I am making up for it with what will probably be amongst the longest ones I've written yet. In order to make it somewhat readable, I've used spoiler tags for the general Piefed and Lemmy updates, please uncollapse them to read the juicy details.

General server updates:

A little while ago I made some updates to the "old" frontends (mlmym) at old.lemmy.zip and old.piefed.zip. These included massive performance improvements and fixes. Recently, local legend @Blaze@piefed.zip has also been helping out, adding LOADS of features to the piefed version. If you're looking for a familiar but powerful alternative to the old reddit interface, definitely check out old.piefed.zip.

The Button just finished its 6th season (a Halloween themed season) - you can read more about how it went here.

Finally, we'll be doing some feedback collection soon. It has been quite a while since we did our last one, but given how much things have changed, I think it is well worth doing it again. We will let you know when it is ready.

PS hello to all you ex-redditors who have found your way here. Please do reach out if you need anything!

tl;dr - Piefed.zip was hit by a Cryptominer during an update, account sessions were invalidated and passwords reset. No data known to have been taken.

PiefedOn the 24th October (heading into the 25th) Piefed.zip underwent scheduled maintenance to update to the latest version, including a full server update. At the time, it all appeared to work fine and Piefed.zip came back up as expected. On the 26th, Piefed started reporting cron job errors (A cron job is an automated, time-based task scheduled to run on the server):

Some cron tasks have not been run recently:

daily_maintenance (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-24 03:18 UTC),

send_missed_notifs (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:01 UTC),

process_email_bounces (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:01 UTC),

clean_up_old_activities (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:01 UTC),

send_queue (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:05 UTC)

At the same time, checking the server performance we saw the CPU was being maxed out:

(please excuse the crappy mobile screenshot)

This was obviously unexpected. At this point my suspicion was a cron job had stuck in some unexpected way and caused the cpu to just shit the bed, but checking docker showed another error when attempting to initialise container security filters. Specifically, libseccomp reported an effective API level of 1 despite the installed library meeting the version requirements for the requested functionality.

This behaviour was inconsistent with the expected capabilities of the server. Further investigation here led to the discovery of unauthorised processes and persistence mechanisms.

(Although interference from malicious software is a possible explanation, the investigation did not establish a direct causal relationship between the malware and the seccomp failures.)

At this point I took the piefed and infrastructure stacks we use offline, and started trying to figure out what was going on.

Based on the hidden artifacts and persistence mechanisms, I was able to tie this to perfctl, which is a stealthy, persistent Linux malware family designed primarily for cryptomining (XMRIG Monero miners).

This then led to looking for the attack vector. It is known for targetting exposed portainer agents (usually port 9001) and sure enough we had an exposed portainer agent.

We (over 12 months ago) used portainer to manage our servers without needing to ssh in to them. It should have been removed from all our servers a long time ago, however on the piefed server the old portainer agent container was stopped but not deleted. At some point during the maintenance this has been restarted by mistake, and it looks like it was brought up in its default state. Regardless of this, the fact this could ever happen is totally my fault and all blame lies at my feet for not tidying up properly.

So now we knew the attack vector and that the attack took place sometime on the 24th leading into the 25th (based on the graphs first showing the cpu maxing out, it was the early hours of the 25th).

At this point both INeedMana and myself were able to start a system restore process. Luckily Hetzner provides a really really handy backup system, and we reimaged the server with a backup from the 22nd, and were able to reapply our encrypted offsite database backup to the server. We also redid the updates, and obviously made sure perfctl was not present on the backup from the 22nd, which it was not.

While we can't see any evidence that anything touched the piefed database that shouldn't have, we have changed every single key on the server and in our infrastructure, and we invalidated everyone's passwords by setting them to null

docker compose exec -T db \
  psql -U piefed -d piefed -v ON_ERROR_STOP=1 <<'SQL'
BEGIN;

UPDATE public.user
SET password_hash = NULL
WHERE instance_id = 1
  AND password_hash IS NOT NULL;

COMMIT;
SQL

By setting them to null, Piefed very handily forces the user to reset. Our other option was to generate new passwords for everyone, but this felt more intuitive, or at least the least confusing option of two bad options.

We also reset the secret key that validates logged in sessions, so this forced everyone to log out too, hence they would have to reset their password.

We also redid the firewall, beefing it up an awful lot (unclear if this would have helped with this, but worth it anyway), redid the docker networking away from the piefed default to be more compartmentalised and hopefully secure, and reviewed the whole networking stack. There is still management software, but this is restricted to just a VPN connection and not accessible externally, which has been stress tested - it will fail-secure should the VPN not work.

Massive shout of thanks from myself to INeedMana for jumping in and spending hours fixing this with me, guiding me, and putting up with my stress and panic!

We will keep monitoring going forwards, and let everyone know if we have any further concerns, but it does look like it is resolved now.

Oh and after all that we did manage to update Piefed too :)

tl;dr - removal of UK geoblock, application changes, improved ban notice, performance improvements etc.

lemmy.zip

I've been having a good old play with Lemmy to tweak it to how I want it, but not too much as 1.0 is coming up.. soon..

Anyway, some of you may have been around here long enough to remember that back at the beginning of 2025 (almost 2 years ago now!) we had to block the UK to comply with the very draconian and only getting worse Online Safety Act (because I am a UK citizen sadly).

Mainly, this is because there is no way to prevent children from accessing NSFW content in Lemmy. Now, I've been able to add a complete an unremovable block on NSFW content on UK users. Is it ideal? No. Is it something I agree with? Also no. Does it allow us to accept UK users back on Lemmy.zip? Probably..? I need to do more digging, but for now UK users can once again sign up, they just can't turn on NSFW content. Sorry about that. You'll have to get your particularly saucy ankle pictures elsewhere.

Users in the UK attempting to turn on NSFW will instead see this:

And UK users going directly to NSFW content will see this instead:

I have also recently added a minimum character length to the Lemmy.zip registrations for the answer. You've pretty much all filled one in if you're on Lemmy.zip, but what you don't see is the amount of people who type stuff such as "lemme in" or "aldkasdkjas" or stuff like that. So, now users have to enter 50 characters to not be auto-rejected. We still read every single one before approving though, we just turn those away that can't be bothered filling it in.

I have also added an improved ban message when a banned user tries to log in. Normal Lemmy just pops up a little message saying can't log in, now the user gets a full on warning:

Hopefully you never see that screen, but at least you know it exists now :)

I did also fix .avif images not opening in-line, although this has since been backported by the devs into 0.19.21 so I hope to anything almighty I stop getting complaints about avif images (just need some outdated apps to finally support them!).

I also dropped some very specific local performance improvements into lemmy, including a very detailed and overly complex (for me) bug between postgres and lemmy that was affecting schwim (one our admins) and I'm sure others out there.

I will try and explain it to you, while also explaining back to myself.

When you scroll to page 2 of a feed like All/New, lemmy says “give me the next 25 posts after the last one I showed.” The way it phrased that to the database was one big combined comparison, roughly “find posts that come after (this pinned-status, this score, this timestamp, this ID)” all bundled into a single tuple comparison.

Example tuple comparison:
(featured, score, published, id) < (last post's featured, score, published, id)

Here’s where Postgres does the database equivalent of confidently walking into a glass door. When it sees a bundled comparison like that, its query planner (the bit that decides how to actually fetch the rows) only bothers to look at the first column in the tuple to guess how many rows will match. The first column was featured (i.e. is this post pinned?). And the comparison effectively asked for posts where featured < false.

Nothing is less than false. False is the bottom. So Postgres looked at that, went “ah, this will match approximately... one row, maybe zero,” and picked a strategy optimised for returning a tiny handful of results.

Except it was about to return thousands.

So now Postgres is running a plan designed for a teaspoon of data against an ocean of it. To make it worse, lemmy.zip users have community block filters (including ghost-blocks left clinging to communities that were removed, the digital equivalent of a restraining order against someone who already moved away). Those filters nudged the planner toward sorting every single older post in the feed from scratch, every time someone clicked “next page.”

The damage:

40 to 100 seconds per page load. Per request. Page two. ~14 GB of temporary files spewed onto disk, because it couldn’t sort that much in memory, so it wrote the overflow to disk and sorted it there. Repeatedly. For a button click. The fix (anticlimactically small, as the best ones are): instead of cramming featured into the bundled comparison and letting Postgres faceplant, we just say up front, “we’re past the pinned posts now, so filter featured = false,” and then only bundle-compare the columns that actually matter (score, time, ID). Same posts. Same order. Postgres now estimates correctly, picks a sane plan, and the results:

~25 milliseconds. Down from up to 100,000.

That’s roughly a 4,000× speedup from telling the database something it technically already knew but was too proud to figure out on its own. No migration, no schema change, no new features, just one clause moved so the query planner would stop hallucinating.

The downside is if the amount of pinned posts spills over on to page 2, then it wouldn't show them. However we've had at most like 3 pinned posts at once... so that is very unlikely to happen.

For mods, I am also looking at implementing more robust moderation reports for us. Currently admins resolving reports interferes with mods resolving reports, so I am working on a resolution to that, at least until 1.0 is here and changes how reports work.

One more thing I've added, once a user does sign up, they should now get this pop up:

It is an attempt to at least explain how the process works. Hopefully it helps?!

Donations

Lemmy and Piefed are not reddit. We don't collect and sell your information. We don't serve adverts. We dont make you the product. Unlike all big tech, we truly are the product here, not you. This is about as close to free as you can get these days.

However, running servers is getting more and more expensive. You may have heard of this "AI" thing going around, and it keeps driving prices up. The cost of the Piefed server has almost doubled in a matter of months. The lemmy server is already an expensive beast, and that isn't going to get any cheaper either. The cost of hosting images, purchasing domains, creating and storing offsite backups, heck even having reliable email all adds up.

So far, we have been incredibly fortunate to be funded by donations. But the costs do keep increasing. Therefore if you are coming here and enjoying it here, please please please consider a donation. It doesn't have to be a big one. If everyone who read this donated $1 we'd be sorted for months. If everyone set up a recurring monthly $1 we'd be sorted for years.

Please do support independent platforms (who spend their spare time running services for you for free) with a small donation if you can.

Oh, and we're not just a random guy behind a computer screen. Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip are a non profit organisation - DotZip Ltd. We're here for the long haul, because we care about a free and open internet.

Here are some options if you can donate:

Hello friends (and potential enemies)

I am a little poorly this week, so I am going to keep this one a bit short sorry.

New frontend for Piefed - old.piefed.zip

I've taken the "old" interface from Lemmy and made it work with piefed (mostly).

Fairly few issues over the last month thankfully!

Hey,

I'd like to view content in Finnish and English (and undetermined), but it automatically deselects the previous language when I try to select multiple languages in the settings.

Also, I'd like to add pronouns to my display name, like so: "Dreamcatcher [they/them]", but it won't save the display name.

How can I fix this?

Thank you.

Server updates

I just want to say thank you to everyone who responded to last month's call for donations. It was a great response, and helps to keep this social media free for everyone.

This month, INeedMana has been busy keeping the server updated and making improvements to the infrastructure, tidying up processes and un-breaking my changes. It all helps to keep the services able to run long-term and efficiently. We even fixed a bug that prevented embeds from working properly!

Throughout August, Lemmy.zip was going swimmingly well up until Sunday 30th, when it decided to fall over in the most obscure way.

Following a slow-down in the UI, a restart of services triggered a latent docker bug. This in turn killed the Lemmy services off, which all started returning 504 errors, or loading the pages very, very slowly (upwards of 60 seconds if it didn't time out). The API was also down now, so mobile apps stopped working.

After around two hours of debugging, I tried the ultimate fix, one that has never failed me and has always had a 100% success rate. I turned it off and back on again.

Good news, when it restarted we were no longer getting 504 errors! Sadly, we were now getting 502 errors instead. Excusemewhatisgoingon.jpeg

I had solved the pesky 504 error by instead making the UI impossible to access. Thankfully, the API was inexplicably back up (if verrrrrrrry sloOoOoOooOooOOOOw) which was both helpful and also completely baffling as to what the issue could be. I had no idea why the error we were seeing before the reboot had completely changed, and suddenly the API that wasn't working was now working fine.

This ruled out DNS (it's always DNS), nginx (despite me spending two hours debugging our nginx configs), the postgres database, the pict-rs service, heck I even tried the email service just to be sure.

Somehow, Lemmy was answering API requests, the database was nearly idle, the UI container was actually still serving pages to anyone who could figure out how to get there. Every part of the service was in perfect working order. Except it wasn't working.

By this point I had eliminated so many possibilities I was drifting towards the only reasonable explanation left: I had personally offended the god(s) of networking.

Suddenly, I noticed something that didn't quite look right - docker.

More specifically, on the version of docker we were on, it gives each container a MAC address derived from the container's IP address. At some point, somehow, while trying to work out why the UI wasn't quite playing nicely, I had triggered a bug that gave two containers in the docker network the same MAC address. Before rebooting, I have no idea which two containers this was, but the error persisted over a reboot. When the server rebooted, every container came back in a different order and got shuffled a new IP, while keeping the MAC address from its old one.

Eventually I narrowed it down to the UI container and the internal proxy. So when the proxy yelled "WHO HAS 172.20.0.6?" into the void, the answer that came back was its own MAC address. It had spent the entire afternoon posting every single page request to itself, then waiting 60 seconds for a reply from a container that was, tragically, also itself.

For once, it wasn't DNS. It was ARP. You remember ARP exists, right? Because I didn't.

The fix in the end was to force the lemmy UI off the docker network, and reconnect it with a different fixed IP, which forced docker to derive a fresh MAC (and then restarting the nginx proxy so it picked up the change).

And then everything came back up like nothing had ever been wrong. Fab.

And that's how I spent a Sunday afternoon.

Anyone else having trouble accessing Lemmy.zip the last couple of days?Accessing the URL on a browser times out for me most of the time for the last two or so days. It was up last night but down again this morning. It happens for me at home and at work, so I thought it wasn’t just me, but since I haven’t seen anyone else mention it, I’m now uncertain.#Lemmy @home

Hi!

I'm gonna try to do an introduction post, bear with me.

I go by Rin (shocked this name wasn't taken already, it's fairly popular) primarily, especially these days online. I'm on one other Lemmy instance, but thought this one looked friendly too, so I decided to stick my head out of hiding and see what was up.

Some things about me!

  • I live with 3 dogs and a Creature ™ (he's theoretically dog shaped, so we call him a dog) and the latter and one of the other dogs are mine. All four are rescues from Texas that have mostly traumatic backstories except the one who was part of an "oops litter" that got handed over to a rescue to place the dogs. Creature ™ is named Champion and he's a spaniel with some golden retriever in there, while Bowser is a dutch shepherd and plott hound mix.
  • I've been playing video games since I was three years old! It's debatable what my first game was, exactly, but it was either Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario World, or Mario Paint. I'm mostly a PC gamer now (I do have a Switch laying around collecting dust for the most part) and I like a lot of different games and genres. For example, very excited about the release of Fields of Mistria out of early access, but was also just rolling around playing some Remnant 2.
  • I love writing. I primarily do a lot of roleplay with heavy emphasis on worldbuilding, but I've been burned out on writing by myself for a while. It's been a lot of "create what you want to see" and eventually I got tired of doing that alone when I found out what forum roleplay was. I tend to write a lot of darker topics but I don't actually write the "dark" parts out. Those all go in the history. I'm more interested in writing the healing process and getting characters what they need.
  • I've been working on learning Linux while trying to set up some home servers for media and some other things (save me RSS feeds, save me from having to go to Substack to read about tabletop rpgs...) but admittedly I'm not very good at it and I need a lot more practice. I've been at it for at least a year now, but I still feel like I don't know anything, hahaha.

That's about it! As for an ending, if you could be any animal, or Creature ™ that is real (or not!), what would you be?

Hello all!

Welcome to .zip's August Server update. Sorry I missed July's, it has been a busy couple of months.

Server updates

One important thing, and my least favourite to talk about, is donations. Hosting costs have shot up again following the further the ever-growing AI bubble stealing all the RAM, and so we're barely, if at all now, breaking even. There is more information in the donation section below, but if you truly value your online privacy and social media spaces free from corporate interests and advertising, please consider a small donation.

Also, The Button had it's 4th season! It lasted over 60 hours, the longest every season, and Red had an absolutely resounding win this time around! If you're interested in playing a silly web game with your fellow fediverse users, please keep an eye on the community: !thebutton@lemmy.zip

Finally, we have a new Admin joining the Team for Piefed.zip and Lemmy.zip - @schwim@piefed.zip / @Schwim@lemmy.zip. They'll be helping us to moderate the sites!

At the end of July, we saw a massive scraping attack (we assume) hitting Piefed.zip quite hard, enough to start timing the site out and effectively DDOS'ing the server. In order to combat this, we've been playing with the Cloudflare managed challenge. In the process of this, I did manage to temporarily break frontends, then mobile apps, but thankfully it's all in place now and appears to be working well. You'll see the jump in traffic in the graphs further down.

We also fixed a bug I had introduced in the Nginx config by putting my own CSR headers in. This was preventing embeds from Youtube etc from displaying. This is resolved now, but please do let us know if you do notice anything like this not working.

We applied the latest Lemmy updated, 0.19.19-jemalloc, which included a fix to memory allocation. Since this, we've seen a measured performance improvement and smaller use of RAM, which is really positive. (there is a version 0.19.20 but this is just 0.19.19-jemalloc so we've not bothered)

Please Don’t Be a Lurker!

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

Donations

As alluded to above, the price of the servers has once again increased. Boo.

This does mean we need to ask again that any amount, even a small amount, you can safely and comfortably spare, please consider donating to us.

All donations go 100% towards server hosting costs. DotZip Ltd is a non-profit set up entirely to manage the sites, and exists solely to ensure donations are legally spent in the best possible way for the running of the sites.

Costs include the domains, the server hosting, image hosting, backups, email, and others.

Liberpay (Card, Paypal)

Liberpay is our newest donation method. You can donate with Paypal or with a card. The link is https://liberapay.com/dotzip

OpenCollective (Card)

Our classic donation option, but only supports card payments. The link is https://opencollective.com/lemmyzip

Open Collective backers

If you're enjoying Lemmy.zip or Piefed.zip, please check out the OpenCollective page, we have a selection of one-off or recurring donation options. All funds go directly to hosting the sites and keeping the virtual lights on.

Ko-Fi (Card, Paypal)

We also have our Ko-Fi page if you'd rather use this site, which also supports Paypal and Card payments.

So I was asked to write something to sign up here and I wrote a little story inspired by "the grasshopper and the squirrel". It's a bit rough around the edges since I just typed more-or-less stream of conciousness style. May not be used to train AI!

Pepper and the sunset

In the sleepy village of Pine Hollow most animals dutifully return to their homes when the sun becomes orange. The hares to their burrows, the foxes to their dens, the squirrels to their nests. But not Pepper the Skunk who would climb the nearby hill to draw the colorful sunset.

Evening after evening she would draw and color the sunset in her notebook. This baffled the other animals and they asked why she would do this. They understood the urge to paint something beautiful but surely the novelty would wear out fast.

"Not every sunset is the same" answered Pepper "Who knows if tomorrows sunset will be strawberry jam colored with clouds like whipped cream or or more like a fresh slice of an orange with purple cotton candy?"

Pepper would usually wake up later than the rest who were already busy and had a harder time finding food to stock up for the winter. This baffled the other animals and some secretly expressed worries that they would be expected to share their hard earned stocks for the winter with Pepper who had her "Head in the clouds" as they would say.

Come winter a quietness settled over Pine Hollow. The bigger animals would hibernate, the smaller ones would sleep a lot and occasionally venture out to their stocks. As the days dragged on however their stocks grew smaller and the village elders organised aid for animals whos stock had rotten, got found by birds or who otherwise had issue finding enough to eat. These made for gloomy meetings in the villages main burrow where the tired animals would grumpily help one another. Some gave freely, some just gave so the whole affair would be over faster and they could return to their burrows.

It wasn't long until some animals started moaning about the lack of sun and how they wish spring would finally come and they could see the sun again. Despair was beginning to set in and some even said they couldn't remember what the sun looked like. It was Pepper then, who had come to rely on some of the aid as well, who came in early for the next meeting and set up her drawings of the sun. Yellow suns in a blue sky, orange suns sinking into clouds, red suns angrily trying to peek through the clouds to get a last glimpse of Pine Hollow.

When the other animals entered there were sounds of amazement and sighs of relief. Some animals just sat in front of one of the paintings and stare at it. Soon the animals of Pine Hollow had a glimmer of hope that the winter would soon be over and they would be able to play outside and eat fresh food and berries. They thanked Pepper for keeping such a rich stock of the sunlight to help them keep heart through the cold and cloudy winter days.

I have zero artistic skills so I don't know how to get started but if someone wants to put together some kind of plan we can get something together. @Demigodrick@lemmy.zip made a post a couple months ago but Canvas is live now so I was wondering what's going on

Introduction (lemmy.zip)
submitted 4 months ago by to c/home@lemmy.zip

Hello, everyone,

This is my first-ever post on Lemmy/the Fediverse. I've just arrived here after being banned from, and ultimately quitting, Reddit; I was on there for 6 years, so I'm essentially starting social media over again. I was told that Lemmy was the closest alternate to Reddit out there, yet I'm still not entirely sure how this works.

A bit about me: I'm 24 years old, I live in Reston, Virginia (US), I'm near the end of an IT degree at George Mason University, and I am on the autism spectrum (Asperger's syndrome, to be precise). I enjoy literature, gaming (in particular FromSoftware games), and am starting to get really into AI (Claude in particular). Being from the Washington DC area, I also enjoy a good bit of political conversation (center-right/libertarian overall, LibCenter/LibRight on the compass). My father being ex-USAF, I also enjoy discussing geopolitics and military/defense matters.

I came to this particular server/instance/super-community/whatever-this-place-is, and to Lemmy overall, via the Voyager IOS app (it was the first thing that came up in the app store), though I'm making this post on desktop, as it seems Voyager doesn't allow the option, that I can see, to make posts in the first place. As a former Redditor, I'd like some advice as to...well...what to DO to make the most of this social network.

Hello all!

To celebrate Lemmy.zip turning 3 years old, we are once again hosting a small giveaway to say thank you for being here ❤️

We're giving away 3 prizes to 3 lucky winners. This will be 1 x £25 Steam gifts, and 2 x £10 Steam gifts.

The giveaway will be open for 48 hours from 18:00 UTC on the 10th June 2026, to 18:00 UTC on the 12th June 2026. This thread will unlock at 18:00 UTC :)

You can enter by making a comment in this very thread! Your comment can say or be absolutely anything you want (within reason!)

Once you've made a comment, you should get a message back from ZippyBot confirming you've entered and a ticket number. For transparency, at the end of this we'll publish the entry list and ticket numbers.

You must be a Lemmy.zip OR a Piefed.zip user to enter (comments from anyone else will be ignored!) and you will need a Steam account and be happy to send me your username so I can gift you the value via Steam. Your Lemmy.zip/Piefed.zip account must have been created before the 9th June 2026.

At the end of the giveaway, I'll lock the thread and Zippy will pull three random entries. The first username pulled will win the first prize (£25), and the other two users will win the other prizes (£10).

(EDIT: Thanks to @Thordros@hexbear.net there is now a 4th place prize of £10!)

I've put a few FAQs in this spoiler tag if you want to know more:

FAQs - PLEASE READ!

FAQs

  • Q) Can anyone enter?
  • A) You must be a lemmy.zip user or a Piefed.zip user, have a steam account, and your account must have been created before 9th June 2026

  • Q) Can I have a giftcard for a different platform, i.e. xbox or playstation?
  • A) Unfortunately not. Those platforms (to my knowledge) don't allow me to purchase a giftcard in the UK and you activate it anywhere in the world. Steam allows currency conversion on gifts.

  • Q) How quickly will I get my prize?
  • A) Steam requires that someone must be on a user's friend list for 3 days before giftcards can be sent, therefore I will share my Steam profile with the winners (or vice versa) and after 3 days of being friends on Steam, I will send the gift over. (Unless you live in the UK, in which case I can send you a code within 24 hours)

  • Q) I think my entry was valid, but I didn't get a reply from Zippybot with my ticket number. What do I do?
  • A) Send me a message asap! You can try commenting again too.

  • Q) Are user donations funding this?
  • A) No, just making it clear here that the donations to Lemmy.zip and PIefed.zip only ever go towards the server and Lemmy.zip infrastructure. The funds for this are coming from my wallet :)

  • Q) How does Zippy select the winners?
  • A) Zippy randomly shuffles the list of entrants in the DB. It then randomly shuffles the list again in Python. Then it randomly selects 3 winners from that double shuffled list.

  • Q) What if something goes wrong?
  • A) If for any reason something goes wrong during the giveaway, it will be paused until it can be resumed. If too much time lapses, the giveaway will be restarted.

3 years ago today Lemmy.zip was created, and what a journey it has been!

I never thought it would grow beyond a few users, and that it would probably crash and burn after I inevitably broke something.

Amazingly, we're still here and now the 3rd most active Lemmy server!

To celebrate, I've pulled together a recap of everyone's time on Lemmy.zip - you can view yours at recap.lemmy.zip!

I want to say a big thank you to the admin team v4ld1z, gazby, and INeedMana for helping me to keep things running, and to all the moderators who take take the time to build and foster their communities.

I also want to thank you, the reader, for being part of Lemmy.zip. Without you, this would all be rather pointless!

Hear ye, hear ye! Gather round the lantern, settle yourselves by the fire, and let me regale you with the tale of the past month's goings-on. There have been victories, mishaps, curious discoveries, and perhaps even a little bit of chaos. Actually it was pretty much just chaos.

Server updates

DotZip turns 3 years old on June 10th! To be more precise, Lemmy.zip turns 3 years old but we're gonna use that as our official birthday across our sites. Piefed.zip turns 1 year old just 3 days later, so it's close enough we'll use it as our birthday date :)

We'll have some birthday celebrations taking place, plus a cool little mini-site (we had these in Year 1 and Year 2 so we'll keep the tradition going, although it will be slightly different this year!

Piefed took its turn at being the problem-instance for once, and caused some major headaches. Very unlike Piefed, which is normally the well behaved child instance.

A user disclosed publicly some vulnerabilities in Piefed that could be exploited, into a lemmy community without notifying the developer first of this. As this could then be used by anyone to exploit piefed instances, a number of Piefed admins including us took our Piefed instances offline until the fixes could be pushed. During this time, some further exploits were shared which indicated that the instance needed to stay offline longer, including the ability for any account to ban any other account without authentication. As this could be used to target vulnerable users, we held Piefed.zip offline a bit longer until these fixes were pushed too.

Thankfully all fixes were pushed in about 24 hours, and the site is back up, but it does show the impact on instances when disclosures are made improperly. The vulnerabilities were also all discovered by having an LLM scan the codebase, which probably indicates where we're at as a society right now, and that anyone developing code probably needs to do this to make sure someone doesn't beat them to it.

Thankfully it doesn't appear any real damage was done!

After last month's Lemmy drama with nested comments, Lemmy.zip has taken its turn being well behaved and I don't have too much to say here. The Lemmy 1.0 beta is out and in testing, so hopefully not too long before we're able to upgrade and get all the cool new features.

So the thing is that in when I'm about to make a new post, on the top, search bar, where the text is, it's moving to fast, that causes my broswer lag.

This was before the update and happened again in my previous post. Anyone else had the same bug/thing?

example lemmy.zip/create_post?body=text moving fast

Hello all!

I have been solidly ill for about 2 months, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. To that end, I am able to actually write some stuff this month, instead of last month's phone-it-in excuse of an update. And what a month its been!

To add to that, next month (June 10th) is Lemmy.zip's 3rd Birthday! If Lemmy.zip were a small child, it would apparently be able to ride a tricycle. How about that eh. Anywho, keep an eye out for our birthday celebrations :)

Server Updates

Status Page Updates

First, we have a new status page coming! It may already be in place by the time you read this. Currently we've been using Betterstack for the status page, but it has a limited number of sites we can monitor. We could use UptimeKuma, but I've never liked the style of it. Anyway we've swapped now, and the status page will be hosted at status.dotzip.ltd but all the sites we run will have status subdomains redirecting here, i.e. status.lemmy.zip will redirect there.

All our services can be documented on that page now, for a full picture of our infrastructure.

The Button

Season 3 of The Button starts very soon - 20:00 UTC on Monday 4th May (thats like, 2 days away!)

Originally it was just meant to be an April Fools joke but due to popular demand it keeps coming back.

More info is in the !thebutton@lemmy.zip community :)

Piefed.zip has been relatively stable for the past month. That's how I like my services :)

Let's start with the performance issues. It kind of ties up everything that's been happening this month on lemmy.zip nicely.

A little while ago, Lemmy version 0.19.16 was released. This introduced some database pooling/timeout changes, and as many of these things can do, this had the knock on effect of uncovering a previous bug with nested comments, which had managed to hide away.

Ultimately, deeply nested comment threads would cause lemmy to recursively process the whole comment chain until this caused a timeout in the software and a stack overflow of that process thread, which would lead all the threads becoming overwhelmed and unable to keep up with requests, causing lemmy to eventually restart. It becomes a bit of a federation death spiral:

  • An instance sends deeply nested comments
  • Lemmy recursively processes it
  • Workers get tied up
  • Queue fills
  • New tasks can’t start
  • Eventually → crash

This became apparent with the log line:

Timeout occurred while waiting for a slot to become available

Unfortunately, no amount of config tweaking could resolve this one.

For example, the above chart shows a 2 day period in early april - each drop is a restart of the server container as it gets timed out by a comment thread. Each time a new comment was posted, it caused the whole thread to be reprocessed and a new crash. This was exacerbated by the posting habits of some users on certain communities posting lots of deeply nested comments very quickly which then caused a loop of crashing and restarting -> next nested comment is processed -> crash and restart and so on. This is why I made the decision to temporarily defederate hexbear, as we'd gone about an hour of trying to process one set of comments in a thread over on Hexbear and it was causing about 10 seconds of uptime -> crash -> restart and so on.

Much more information on the error is available in that linked thread, and the it contains links to the github issue if you're interested in seeing more in depth log errors.

I think there is still more work for the devs to do on the database pooling/timeout issues. This was ultimately two issues interacting to cause the restarts. Deeply nested comments eating up the CPU being recursively processed (fixed), and the added timeout functionality causing this to compound and crash the server.

Moving on to something a bit better, if you're a moderator then you may be interested to know that our ModTools site for Lemmy.zip now allows you to link your own bot account, so instead of all actions coming from ZippyBot, you can use your own community bot!

Just make sure it's set as a moderator in the community. I've been trialing this for a little while in the gaming community with @GamingBot@lemmy.zip.

ModTools is under heavy development, so please do expect bugs and things to not work. I also appreciate feedback on UI/UX and any missing functionality you'd like to see.

And thats it for another month.

I do want to share the sad news that Lemmy.zip lost a member of the communtity recently. @GeekFTW@lemmy.zip and I first got chatting around 2 years ago when he was looking to move the !squaredcircle@lemmy.zip away from it's then-home due to performance issues, and it eventually settled on Lemmy.zip. Since then, I had got used to seeing his name pop up frequently in the local feed. The absence of that name a little while ago was sad, but it was recently confirmed that he had suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.

Lemmy is still a small community, and there are certain usernames you come to recognise and enjoy seeing in your feed. Sadly, we’ve lost one of those names, and I do hope you’ll take a minute to pause and remember the person behind the username. Whether you interacted with him regularly or just recognised his posts in passing, he was part of what made this community feel alive.

Online spaces can sometimes feel transient, but the people in them and the connections they create are very real.

Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and everyone here who felt his presence. He’ll be missed.

Thanks,

Demigodrick

Ahoy hoy friends.

spoiler

We are officially in to March (you probably already knew that). Unfortunately I forgot there were only 28 days and so have had no prep time to come up with anything remotely witty as an opening paragraph, so you're stuck with whatever this sorry excuse of an opening is. Anyway, onwards!

Server Updates

This bit relates to all our services, so I'll put it at the top here!

Two big things - firstly, keep an eye out for April Fools day this year 😜 I've actually put a bit of work in this year so I'm excited.

Secondly, Hetzner who host all our servers are putting up their prices. In all fairness, this is happening across the industry as the demand for RAM soars, and Hetzner have been pretty rock solid in terms of pricing & support over the last 3 years, so I'm not too upset about it. We'll just have to keep an eye on it vs donations over the next 6 months.

After our last server update, we decided to upgrade the server to the next VPS (Virtual Private Server) tier due to the influx of new users. The cost increase at the time was minimal and gave a significant boost to performance. We now have 8 vCPUs and 16GB RAM for Piefed. If we decide to upgrade again, we'll likely swap from a shared VPS set up to a dedicated VPS which should give more consistent performance but does cost that bit more.

I'm always on the look out for Piefed.zip staff to approve new accounts and handle mod reports. If you're a regular Piefed.zip user and would like to help out, please drop me a message!

Thankfully nothing major has happened on Lemmy.zip this month. We're basically in a holding pattern of waiting for the Lemmy devs to release 1.0 so we can do the upgrade and get access to all the new goodies. Hopefully not too long to wait.

I do need to do some updates on the server and the services we run, I'll try and schedule that in the next couple of weeks.

Since enabling the cloudflare challenge across Lemmy.zip we've had no downtime or scraper incidents at all, which has been quite nice!

Sir, this is a Wendy's. Nobody wants to see your graphs.

Piefed.zip

For Piefed, we only store data for 7 days rather than 30 (because historically we had less storage space on the server) so all graphs are 7 days unless otherwise stated.

OK well that's it for now - March is an exciting month for me, not just because April fools is at the end but also because, for anyone who was around a year ago, my child turns 1 year old during this month which is absolutely nuts. Time has flown by so quickly (despite the long, long nights and sleep deprivation).

We're also coming up on Lemmy.zip's third birthday in June (Year one and Year two are both still up!) which is another awesome milestone!

Thank you, see you in a month!

I posted https://lemmy.zip/post/59669786. I noticed that when I was on https://lemmy.zip/c/rpgmemes@ttrpg.network and clicked the image on that post to enlarge it, it forced me to a new page https://images.lemmy.zip/pictrs/image/d73bfddb-8062-41a8-bef4-fe22a9b00a83.avif. Most images on https://lemmy.zip/c/rpgmemes@ttrpg.network can be clicked to enlarge and you just stay on https://lemmy.zip/c/rpgmemes@ttrpg.network instead of being taken to a different page for the image. I was wondering what is causing this, since this happened for a few of my recent posts.

I do know that I used Create Post and then hit Browse next to Image to upload the post. This post was .webp.

I also know that I posted https://lemmy.zip/post/59611401 and have a deleted version of it at https://lemmy.zip/post/59611186. I forget which one of these it was, but I started out uploading a .webp and got the same result: no click to enlarge and staying in the community, clicking only leads to a different page. I edited the post with some other filetype, .jpeg, .jpg, or .png. Same result. And because of this I have multiple of the exact same picture littering my Uploads section on my profile and cannot delete the unused ones (I click delete and get the message it succeeded, but no matter what I do I still always have four of that picture in my Uploads section), so now I worry I am wasting Lemmy server storage.

Starting from a few months ago, images don't work on any android clients (Sync, Summit or Jerboa). I would like to get this acc to work again.

Other instances' (.world, nsfw) images load fine. This happens when using or not using a VPN. Images load fine when using alexandrite.

How would I even begin to debug this?

Edit: attached an example corrupted image file:

Edit Edit: Android 11 didn't support AVIF codecs, updating to android 12 fixed the issue.

The fog finally broke, and there it was: the end of January.

At this point I was beginning to suspect it had been extended without consultation. Days had started repeating. The same Monday kept turning up in different hats. Even the calendar looked tired of explaining itself.

People spoke of February in hushed, theoretical terms, like a place you might go one day if conditions improved. Some claimed they’d seen sunlight. Others said time was moving forward again, but there was no evidence to support this and these people were rightly ridiculed.

Still, it has arrived. The end of January. The beginning of February. We have made it.

Server Updates

Lemmy.zip

Well January was a fun month. In full "New Year, New Me" mode, the scrapers decided to full on try and take us down in their efforts to steal all the content.

Here is a graph:

Normally, this line should be flat/non existent. The orange is showing how many 502 errors we're seeing, and the purple is when everything gets overwhelmed and we start returning 504 errors and suddenly everyone gets a lovely cloudflare screen as the server screeches to a halt.

Our usual method of dealing with this is working out who is firing all this traffic at us and adding their ASN to the challenge list, which previously has then stopped them in their tracks. However they've likely changed track here, and we were seeing lots of sustained scraping from a whole range of IPs, lots of which were residential, and this left us with really only one choice, which was "challenge everything". So, we did just that.

Can you work out on this graph where we may have implemented that?!

This isn't particularly ideal for any of us but hey, people just can't play nice and we have to do stuff like that to stop us from being overwhelmed. The solve rate (i.e. how many requests are legit) is about 2.75% currently. In our last update we shared a screenshot showing a 0.16% solve rate with about 100k attempts per 24 hours - we're currently seeing 600k attempts every 24 hours, so the magnitude of what we need to deal with keeps going up.

Mods! Want people to tag things in your communities?

The ability to set, edit, remove etc tag enforcement from your communities is now available on modtools.lemmy.zip.

Piefed.zip

We have added the Photon front end to Piefed.zip - photon.piefed.zip It's still in beta due to the ever evolving code over on Piefed, but works really well (just like photon for lemmy does!)

We're also going to schedule some downtime on Piefed.zip to upgrade the server. With all the new users (Hello!!) it's starting to push at the seams of suitable performance, so a little bit of extra juice will be on the way. We'll let you all know when that is due to take place.

Piefed has also picked up a bit of attention on Reddit and the like - so if you've come from there, welcome aboard!

Please Don’t Be a Lurker!

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip isn’t money, praise, or a gold plated retirement clock.. maybe. Its participation.

Upvote the things you like. Start a discussion, debate, or ponder about whether cereal is technically a soup. Make new communities if you don’t see one that fits your oddly specific niche obsession. (We don’t judge. Well, we try not to judge anyway.)

The fediverse naturally ebbs and flows, tides of people come and go. But if you’ve found yourself oddly attached to this strange little corner of the internet? Wonderful. Help it breathe. Help it grow. Help it be just a tiny bit weirder in the best possible way.

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

Donations

I come with a blunt request this month, one that I'm not a fan of doing and have tried to avoid as much as possible. Please remember that unlike traditional social media sites, we don't sell your data to advertisers to shove adverts down your throat, and we go out of our way to prevent any form of advertisement making its way on here.

This form of social media is truly free to use.

Stuff for nerds

If, like me, you really like using the terminal on your arch install (I use arch btw) then you will know just how cumbersome it is having to open a web browser just to browse social media and post your thoughts.

Not so long ago, I stumbled across Stegodon which is an SSH-first federated blogging platform - yes, social media in your terminal.

To that end, I've spun up my own personal project at Stegodon.zip which you can connect to via ssh stegodon.zip - it really is that easy (You will need ssh keys first.. you have ssh keys right??)

You are all invited to try it out :)

OK well that's it for now. It has started to snow outside so I'm off to look out the window and moan about the snow while the whole country grinds to a halt, the schools are shut down, flights are cancelled, and supermarket shelves are emptied because there is a very light dusting. Can't wait.

Speak soon!
