With free software you can validate the code quality and tweak and share code as you wish. With AI slop becoming more prevalent this means choosing quality software is much easier. This is especially true given that many proprietary software companies are switching to AI which will harm them in the long run.

In short, free software is human focused. It doesn't have economic incentives for the most part so it will always be as good as the community around it.

"UniGetUI combines packages from the most used Windows package managers into one intuitive interface. Install, update, and uninstall software from Winget, Chocolatey, Scoop, Snap, Pip, Npm, .NET Tool, and PowerShell Gallery — no CLI required."

I had been unable to easily use programs that only exist on the microsoft store for installation through winget because I've ripped most telemetry tracking components from by build.

If you're still on a windows OS for some reason and need a tool from the microsoft store this has turned out to be a good alternative to trying to download and install winget packages with powershell. It also has functions for automatic updates and can take over for updating programs you've installed previously from elsewhere, feels like I just installed fdroid on my pc.

lambdock is a lightweight, hyper-hackable desktop dock for Wayland compositors that bridges a high-performance C graphics engine with an embedded GNU Guile Scheme runtime.

Repository: https://codeberg.org/jjba23/lambdock

License: GPLv3+

Whether you are looking for a smooth macOS-style dock, a minimal launcher, or a Lisp-powered desktop widget bar, lambdock was built to offer extreme flexibility without bloating system resources and remaining flexible but easy to use, with good defaults.

Why would you consider lambdock? Modern Stack & Ultra-Low Footprint: Built on GTK4 and gtk4-layer-shell in C for minimal resource usage, rich graphics and animations (opt-in) with smooth cubic-eased auto-hiding.

Embedded Guile Scheme Engine: Declarative Lisp configuration (~/.config/lambdock/settings*.scm). Easily construct custom app launchers, separators, or dynamic polling widgets (RAM, CPU load/temp, Battery, Clock) using standard Scheme procedures and macros.

Live Interactive REPL & Hot-Reloading: Connect straight into the running dock over a Unix domain socket (/tmp/lambdock-repl.sock) via Emacs/Geiser or socat or whatever you like. Hot-reload configuration files and GTK CSS overrides on the fly via GFileMonitor or the (reload-dock!) REPL hook without dropping Wayland frames or UI thread freezes.

Dynamic Wayland Window Tracking: Uses zwlr_foreign_toplevel_manager_v1 for running app indicators, active window titles, and interactive popover HUDs to focus or close specific instances.

Opt-In Fisheye Magnification: Includes a native, fluid cosine-bell curve hover magnification effect (macOS-style) that can be toggled on or off per item or globally.

Multi-Dock & Multi-Monitor Support: Run independent dock instances across screen edges or monitors simply by dropping additional settings-*.scm files into your config directory.

Built-in Themes & CSS Overrides: Ships with presets (Vanilla, Snow Leopard, Solarized, Unity, Nature) and supports full user CSS customization via ~/.config/lambdock/styles.css.

lambdock works seamlessly across all wlr-layer-shell and foreign-toplevel compliant compositors: Sway, Hyprland, Niri, River, Wayfire, COSMIC, and KDE Plasma (Wayland).

(Note: GNOME/Mutter is currently not supported as GNOME does not implement the layer-shell protocol).

Installation & Packaging (a bit WIP)

lambdock provides multiple ways to build and install across distros:

GNU Guix: Packaged via guix.scm and available in channels.

openSUSE: Packaged as an RPM on openSUSE OBS.

Nix / NixOS: Ships with flake.nix / package.nix (and a PR has been submitted upstream to nixpkgs).

Debian / Ubuntu: Debian packaging helpers included (debuild).

Podman / Docker: Containers are available and also pre-built ones on DockerHub

Build System: Builds cleanly with Meson (meson setup build && ninja -C build).

Since this is my first GTK4 project, all feedback, suggestions, bug reports, and contributions are very welcome!

I posted about this once before, but...

The long and short is:

  • Vizio put a bunch of GPL'd software on their TVs in compiled/binary form only in violation of the terms of the GPL.
  • the Software Freedom Conservancy is suing Vizio to force them to follow the terms of the GPL and release the source code of said GPL'd software.
  • The courts seem quite sympathetic to the SFC's arguments.
  • And if the SFC wins, we can expect 1) a FOSS Linux distribution for smart TV's (think OpenWRT but for smart TVs) and 2) moving forward, demands for GPL compliance to consumer electronics manufacturers from regular folks like you and me will have more "teeth" than they did previously, potentially resulting in a proliferation of new FOSS distributions for various consumer electronic devices.

I really think this is something to get excited about, and I can't wait to follow along as more news comes out about the proceedings.

Full disclosure, the trial has been delayed at the last minute more than once already, so I suppose there's a possibility it won't start tomorrow, but I think this is more "last minute" than any of the last delays have been. So I'm crossing my fingers extra hard.

Edit: Damn! Looks like it got delayed again. Now the trial date is listed as "late 2026". :(

The first release of The Brotherhood is officially out. This is the Architech. It's still not production tested. But it's open-access for the first time. Make some graphs, share with your friends, and track your journey across it. Let the wikipedia of pedagogy begin!!

It's an open-source software that you can use to build obsidian-like knowledge graphs. But unlike obsidian, this is community-built like wikipedia. And it also has git-like forking abilities built in for every graph. All graphs are released under CC BY-SA. Go to our website for more details.

Upcoming features would include -

  1. More workspace features
  2. Complex assessment methods
  3. Work allocation algorithms
  4. Federated hosting
  5. Social hub

Here are some screenshots from this version workspace Academia Library Vision

We are working on a new system for self-learning and teaching. Think of it as Wikipedia but arranged pedagogically. This is a curation and free learning of all kinds of knowledge.

This is the new progress tracking ability added for users to check their progress of a skill graph. The backend handles this via Assessments and Capabilities - 2 general objects in the Brotherhood that will, in the future, serve as the blueprint for more exotic assessment systems like work-based, peer-verified assessments and capability certificates that will serve as the de-facto portable proof-of-skills.

This is currently in beta-stage and behind an invite-only access. However, very soon, signups will be open-for-all and you can test it for yourself. If you wish to try it out before that, please reach out through to us.

Friends,

We're happy to announce that we have funding available to package BusKill in QubesOS as a contrib package.

Bounty Now Available for BusKill Contrib Package in QubesOS

Thanks to a generous donation from NovaCustom, we're offering a bounty to anyone (including you!) who packages BusKill as an official contrib package for QubesOS.

About BusKill

BusKill is a laptop kill-cord. It's a USB cable with a magnetic breakaway that you attach to your body and connect to your computer.

What is BusKill? (Explainer Video)
Watch the BusKill Explainer Video for more info youtube.com/v/qPwyoD_cQR4

If the connection between you to your computer is severed, then your device will lock, shutdown, or shred its encryption keys

thus keeping your encrypted data safe from thieves that steal your device.

About NovaCustom

In Mar 2015, Wessel klein Snakenborg (founder of NovaCustom) started selling highly-customizable Linux laptops from Europe.

In Aug 2021, NovaCustom released their first laptop (NV40) with coreboot pre-installed with Dasharo.
